Changed diff oil today at 22k miles. Just because. Saw a lot more than just specs and sludge on the plug magnet, and a bunch of shavings and specs in the drain pan. Pics of paper towel is what I magneted out of the drain pan. The plug pics are from after I wiped the sludge and recollected the big pieces. Should I be concerned?

In my experience, the first oil change on diffs can look a lot like this. I don’t worry unless it looks like that the second time.

Mine looked very similar on my first change. Not losing any sleep. I’m quickly approaching 60k on mine so I’ll let you know what I find on the magnet this time.

You're GTG with the metallic flakes, but did you relocate the vent yet? If not, I'd do that soon.

I did mine today, similar mileage. I had less on mine but not by much. Pretty standard for a new assembly to have some debris from wearing in. I ended up using right at 4qts. I had the truck level on jackstands since I was doing my transmission fluid at the same time. I know most people do the rear differential fluid change with the truck parked on a level surface. I’m curious how much leveling off the truck affects the level, if any. I didn’t think it was take all 4qts but when the last little bit went in it started to run out.

Pretty typical shavings. I wouldn't even lose any sleep over it.

normal. Its leftover metal from when the axle housing was drilled. You wont see them on your next drain/fill.
