    Hi all,

We have a 2013 Toyota Tundra 4.6L V8 with a starting issue. we replaced the starter and found it had too small of battery (550cca) we replaced it with a 700cca battery.

It has been doing this since before doing the starter and battery, the first time you would go to start it it would not catch but the second time it would, replaced the starter and battery and no change.

We went out to record it starting to show what it is doing and in the video. The first clip was the first time it had been started that day, and of course, it caught immediately. The 2nd and 3rd clips in the video is what it normally does on the first try.

Any ideas of what to look at or try would me greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Is this a flex fuel vehicle by chance?

That sounds rattly and horrible like the starter and flex plate aren't syncing well when you try to start it. What brand of replacement starter did you buy? If the starter is presumed to be known good, I would check the cables to make sure they are not corroded. Not getting enough amps to the starter could be causing incomplete extension of the bendix to engage the teeth on the flex plate. Also have a wicked belt squeek there.

I will have to check on the brand of starter. I know it wasn't purchased through toyota.

On the starter there was the heavy gauge power wire that went to the starter, what was the extra wire that also plugged in for? That was the first time i had ever seen a starter like that.

yes, the belt squeak is awful, that is another on going project were working on while trying to figure out this starting issue.

Starter should have a B+ high amp feed wire and a trigger wire.

    Pretty things
Confirm the correct routing of the accessory belt. Seems fairly common to get it wrong and cause a terrible squeal

Not a fan. I would source an OEM starter, or get the old OEM starter back and test it. You said the symptoms are unchanged which means the repairs were not the answer, or you got bad replacements. That horrible noise sounds like the starter and flex plate aren’t meshing for some reason. I would inspect the flex plate for broken teeth and the starter for a worn gear. Also still suspect the power or ground wire could be corroded, broken, or loose.
