Was thinking of installing the license plate bracket and swapping out the stock bulbs to LED's of the same temperature. Has anyone else done this? Looks like I just need the universal license plate kit, right? Then what factory reverse light bulbs do I need?

The parts search feature using make and model on the VLEDs website is near worthless.

The reverse light is already LED.

Also, here what the vled license plate look like compared to OEM reverse light.

I know, but ideally I wanted to match the temp of the license plate light bracket. Not a huge deal if I can't.

It's LED so there is no bulbs.

Semantics tho right? I know it's not a halogen bulb, but isn't it an LED "bulb"? Or are you saying it's not a serviceable light at all? I haven't taken the cover off.

If it's already led, then it is integrated....no removable bulbs.

Not serviceable at all. It's all one unit. The reverse and license plate light. With one connector.

Ok, but that's not the light I'm referring to. I'm talking about the reverse light beneath the tail light. AND then adding a license plate bracket reverse light. I wasn't planning on tinkering with the light you referenced.

Sorry, just little confused on which reverse light you're referring to, but the only reverse lights that I know of on my 3rd gen are marked #2 in the pic above. The reverse light/license plate light are one unit. I never seen factory led lights use led bulbs, just circuit board LED chips.

Added a pic below, this owner got the VLED license plate lamp too and seems to match pretty well.

Oh boy. Well, now I feel dumb. You're absolutely right. This truck is brand new to me. I'm coming from a 5th gen 4Runner, so I just assumed the system was similar and there was a reverse light contained within the tailight compartment. Oops. I get it now.

Next dumb question... for the guys that have installed the VLEDs license plate bar, what did you tap into? The factory reverse light or the trailer wiring harness? Is one easier that the other? And into what color wires (somebody save me from poking around with a test lamp)?

Been looking at doing the same thing but haven't dug into it yet. Others posted in another thread that they used this so they didn't have to poke into or cut the factory harness.

I received one as a Christmas present and hooked it up last week. I was very impressed with the product and the included harness, which makes installation exceptionally easy.

I immediately noticed a substantial improvement in reverse lighting. The one I have also functions as a tail light and brake light.

Removal takes no more than 5-10 seconds when you want to use the hitch for towing, recovery, bike rack, etc.

Or... You can pick up a nice set of fogs from DD and move the OEM fogs to the back.

Be carefull on the plate lamp bar. It mounts above the plate, there may be little to no clearance when opening the tailgate.

I have the xlp from vled. They make a 7 pin harness that makes it easy to install. I also have diode dynamics reverse light kit and hitch pod

I tow regularly. The receiver hitch light isn't going to work for me, nor if it plugs into the trailer plug for power. I want to tap into the proper wires. Can anyone confirm the color of the wires to tap into?

It’s a harness. There’s no tapping, it doesn’t make you unable to use the plug, it’s a pass through harness, and you can still plug a trailer in.

Unless I'm not following you, again, I don't want to use something that plugs into my trailer harness. I use that too regularly. I want to tap into a wire behind the trailer plug or behind the reverse light. I'm trying to find someone who has actually done this with the VLED's license plate bar and hard wired it, and can confirm specifically which wires they tapped into.

The harness goes behind the bumper plug, between the bumper connector and the body harness.

It keeps your trailer hookups completely functional. Just taps into them to pull power for the light.

doesnt that much light wash out the camera view? it seems to be much better on this gen as it is especially with the handle light to show the trailer hook up already there.

Not sure if you’re asking about the Diode Dynamics hitch light but if so my take is that it’s improved the rear camera view significantly when reversing.

jctmundra, I saw your 1794 in another post with fog light mount under rear bumper. It looks really nice. I was looking for your mounting point and the wiring. By any chance do you have a post about your rear fog light?
