Do I really want to link my phone?

Curious:

New truck, '21 Crewmax with the limited package JBL sound system.

This is the most advanced system I've ever owned. I have done zero customization.

I can link my phone to the head unit via Android Auto.

Phone, texts and a lot of other shit can show up on the head unit screen.

I can't control what gets sent to my phone. Most stuff is rather mundane, but other stuff can be...somewhat inappropriate to passengers I may have present in the truck .

Am I being too paranoid?

Should I just skip linking the phone to the truck?

I do prefer Google Maps to most map programs, but am fine just using the phone without it showing up on the head unit. The truck has navigation offered for another 6 months that I can use then I have to renew.

Has anyone got in trouble with inappropriate texts showing up on the head screen?

Pretend I'm a 10 year old.

I would check your settings on your phone but it could be a difference between iPhone and Android.

When I link my phone via Apple Carplay I get notified of texts, calls and a few other comm app notifications but they don't auto display the content without interacting with the banner notification. Must be a setting somewhere on the phone or head unit or a feature of Android. I also primarily use a VoiP app that seems to be exempt to displaying on the radio head.

 

It's all in the settings. Should be able to set it up where texts don't auto
Automatically display content. Or even display at all.

 

I was hoping this was the case.

I don't need the distraction and don't want passengers seeing business numbers and $ coming across the screen.

Like I said, this is the most advanced sound system I've ever had. I want learn as much as I can.

 

I don't use Android Auto and just Bluetooth for music, the settings on my Samsung Galaxy let me turn calls and text off to where they don't come through Bluetooth.

 

I don't have android but my Apple car play is set up the same. I usually have my phone on DND when driving anyhow. Don't really need the extra distractions...

there are already plenty of those driving crv's.

edit: my wife and I have this saying when we see the small SUV's; ie, crv, rav4, or Honda pilots. Aggressive and Indignant. Seems like a lot of these drivers know how we feel about them because they sure live up to the style.

 

I didn't like the text notifications popping up and found the maps apps to be buggy when using CarPlay. The "sweet spot" I have found is to connect my phone via Bluetooth but NOT use CarPlay, then I choose "iPod" as my device, and it still displays my maps/navigation apps and music (Spotify) on the head unit without showing texts and other notifications.

 

This I like!

 

That is a protip right here. Going to give this a try. Wonder if it works with an iPad

 

Can't say for sure but if the iPad has a cellular signal I would think it would work just the same.

 

easentially what I do as well. Just connect using Bluetooth for music. I don't even like gps or access to apps because I'm a stubborn old school meathead. I'll drive around figuring it out if I'm alone, or have my wife route me in via directions if she's along. I usually look at the gps before I leave if I'm heading somewhere new so I know the route.
