    Some paint problems have reared it's ugly head during the last few months. Looks like the clear is finally going out. :( With my limited knowledge of paint, it looks to me like I could wet sand the old clear away and re-clear. What is everyone else's opinion? Re-clear, sand it down to bare metal and re-do all of it, or just let it go because, after all, it's just an old truck?

    Sanding it down and redoing the clear is what I did on mine, just to buy time and keep it from being so hideous with sunburn patches everywhere. It’s not a permanent fix but it will look better, absolutely.

    What clear did you use and would you use it again?

    Sanding off the old clear and the reapplying new clear can cause ‘possible’ problems. If you don’t get all the old clear off, totally, you might have a problem of the new clear adhering since the old and new clears most likely will be different chemistry. If it were me, I would strip down to bare metal, properly prime and come back up with new base and then clear. I only use PPG on all my old trucks and have never had a issue. The bonus of going down to bare metal is you can easily change the trucks
    color and its like getting a new truck…….well at least to your eyes ha ha
    Good Luck

    I used duplicolor and it’s doing ok after a couple of years. I had the paint from another project and tried it to see what would happen. The gentleman with rhe previous reply is certainly correct that a full repaint is best, but putting on something is way better than doing nothing and letting surface rust start. It will look about 80% better. The base paint goes back to the original color when you re-clear.

    dbittle;
    Unless your a Pro, shooting paint every day, never mix brands of paint or clears, etc.. Many different chemistries are used in making paint. Some chemistries between brands do not play nice when laying primers, base, clear etc. Disaster can happen quick.

    I only use PPG Commercial Auto Finish paints, hardness and clears.
    From Bare Metal up it goes like this;
    PPG MP-170 Epoxy Primer
    PPG MP-180 High Build Primer
    PPG Shop Line Base Color
    PPG Shop Line High Solids Clear

    Frame/Under carriage;
    PPG MOA Chassis Black Satin

    It means I answered the man’s question and I’m tired of the conversation.
