What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

No less than 6, no more than 12 months for short-trip driving.

If doing cheap dino oil, I'd aim for 6 months.
If doing synthetics, you could stretch to 12 months, but you're really not reaping benefits of synthetics in that time frame, IMO, it's not fiscally responsible.

A lot of shops offering cheap oil changes use recycled oil. Granted, a lot of that is reconditioned, but I sure as hell don't trust it. I can tell you, my previous owner did the cheap jiffylube style shops, and it showed when I got under the valve covers.

It's such a simple job to do, I'll never trust anyone to change my oil, unless I've got to hit the dealership anyway, and they've got an oil change special. I only use OEM (or Wix) filters, and I'm picky about my oil.

 

Plenty of meat left on those for many more miles. That groove in the middle of the pads is a good indicator of life left. You are missing the lower brake pad spring clip that helps keep them from rattling / squeaking and holds them off the rotor when not braking. I wouldn't worry about that little bit of overhang, inconsequential.

 

Were gonna see if the Chemical Guys stain remover can help me do better.

I would 100% never use dino oil myself in a vehicle I cared about. Synthetic oil is a superior product. I have run only synthetic oil since it became commercially available and reasonably priced.

 

Looks like the rotor material is thinner on the right side? I’ve only done brakes on these once, but I can’t think of any way to adjust where the pad sits, couple thoughts on that; cheap pads with poor quality control, or; with the upgraded 13WL caliper does the rotor need to be upgraded as well? Maybe it’s the wrong size rotor- I don’t know, but I’m sure one of you guys can confirm or deny that.

 

The answer to that is YES. You might be on to something here. @VR6T should measure his rotors.

Already measured them they're 199.5mm, they are WE rotors. WL rotors should be 231mm.

I forsee slotted rotors in my future.... And dot4 brake fluid, because "racetruck"

I've been poked at a few times in my life for my oil choice, given the lack of highway miles I put on my vehicle. And I do agree: Those who drive primarily (or significant) highway will reap the most benefits from full-syn. It's all I will use. I tend to aim for 1-12 mo cycle or 5,000-7,500 miles, whichever comes first. And I only use Mobil1 full-syn with OEM filters.

 

This reminds me, I got the Bissell @Burgmane was talking up the other day. I've been meaning to get a spot-cleaner to clean the couch our 65lb pup loves to hang on. I'll be curious to see how it does. The tank looks semi-similar to what you've got there.

Yeah, but the Megathread is just a collection of info you'll find anywhere else. And it was a joint effort, @Tundra2 and @bmf4069 and quite a few others, I won't sit here all day and name, but several pitched in to make that thing a reality. Don't lay all the credit on me. I had folks shooting me PMs when I mentioned I was working on it, giving me things to link into the thread, looking it over before the whole thing went live ... Give me props for sweeping a bunch of shit into a pile, but don't give me credit like I built it from scratch, alone.

I'll try whatever folks tell me worked really well for them. I prefer Hoover of old, but know nothing about modern brands. Rainbow? Hoover? Dyson? I'm clueless.

My first decade or so in the labor world was split between wrenching, electronics installing, and restaurants/catering. The only vacuums that ever lasted back then (80's/90's) were Hoovers.

But that was, like, 25-30 years ago now, so I have no clue what the hell works at a professional, die-hard level now.

 

I think it might depend on how long it's been on the shelf. Definitely had mixed results. My favorite has been SEM 19323, but they discontinued it.

 

I wonder what super white would look like on our older trucks as a repaint of natural white. Not that super white has a good track record from Toyota but at least the jambs and engine bay would be close enough to not care about the difference there. Maybe it'd look too fakey fakey b/c it's so whitey?

 

Checked my oil two weeks after changing it. Down 1/2 quart. Better buy another 5 quart jug of Mobil 1.

Looks like I'll definitely be tackling the valve cover in the spring.

 

Old school I need a vac that just works. Sanitaire they've been around forever, parts are dirt cheap, and the whole thing is repairable.

Rear diff breather mod complete. Easy install. I’m sure the original one was gunked up because the diff released pressure as soon as I took it out.

EDIT: Maybe it did inhale. I didn't expect it to make a pssss noise, so I made an assumption.

i had a lock smith offer to match the door & ignition keys on my Taco. Should'a done it, but somehow at the moment $25 seemed extravagant. I'd guess what's good for Taco cylinders is good for Tundra cylinders.
