Trading out of a 2WD 2015 Limited for a new 4WD F150 or Ram 1500

Has anyone thought about trading out of their Generation 2.5 Tundra into a new F150 or RAM 1500? I received mail purchase discount offers from each company and went looking over the last couple of months. I've owned my Tundra since new 70k miles and always serviced at the Toyota dealer since purchase. Truck is mint and every option. So here are my observations: (1) nobody wants to give any decent trade values (not unexpected), (2) manufacturer offers are not that good, (3) dealers are still holding firm to high prices on their new trucks despite lots overflowing with new inventory. But here is the most important factor: Went to each of the F150 and RAM 1500 forums and so many complaints about issues upon issues with their new trucks. So I said to myself which vehicle is going to have less issues over the next 100k miles? My 2015 Tundra with 70k miles or a new 2023 F150 or RAM 1500? Ended up being just a passing thought to think about a new truck.

Unless there's some kind of feature upgrade you really need, I wouldn't. Your dealerships aren't playing ball, which is hilarious, because Dodge in particular is sitting on *years* of inventory they can't move. No thanks.

It's not a great economic climate for new vehicle purchasing anyway, especially if you're not talking about going in and paying cash up front, and then privately selling your truck yourself, which will always get you more than trade.

Also, in my experience, 2WD trucks aren't very desirable in some regions. That may further degrade the offer these stealerships will offer you

I just did the exact opposite. I had a 2020 Ram 1500 and I grew tried of all the problems with 10 Gears and all the electrically components that look pretty cool but that break down all the time. My starter went out at 50K, sensors starting failing at 60K and then my C Connector buss which is basically a network port failed also at 60K miles. I always had Toyota's previous to the RAM and never had any issues so I switched back. And as to the dealers giving fair market value to your trade in, this is an issue as well. The used car market is about to take a major decrease in value so the dealers are a head of that game and not offering that much for trade ins. I sold my truck on Face Book Market place for 12k more than any dealer would offer me. My advice would be would stay away from the 10 gear V6 that have more MPG you'll get frustrated with all the problems you run into. Don't let the pretty lights fool you. The dealers are going to start offering 0 percent again because they are now heavy on New Truck/Car inventory.

Seems like a downgrade to me. But it’s your money and you can do anything you want with it.

I held a 2009 Crewmax for 13 years and went to a Powerboost F150 in 2022. As I have said in many conversations on here, I don't think the Gen3 Tundra is a bad truck. It was just not the step forward I was looking for holding my Gen2 all that time waiting for the redesign to drop.

No regrets here. My Ecoboost is a strong performer. One issue in a year and a half with recall work making my computer go bonkers causing some down time while the dealer sorted it out. Other than that it has been fine. I could have held my 2009 forever but was ready for something new and had a time frame between major life events where it was easier to swing than it will be later.

Was also considering a Ram but everything equipped like I wanted turned out to be the smaller Quad Cab. Then I found my Powerboost on a Ford lot with the 6.5 bed and full 7200 watt inverter in the back and kinda said "OK you can take my money."

I have the extended warranty and think it is really critical to get on modern vehicles. First I ever purchased in my life. I'd get one on a Toyota too reading this Gen3 engine failure thread with everyone reassuring themselves it's only small
    Numbers.

I went the opposite direction. Just sold a Ford and bought a 2021 Tundra. I got tired of continuous issues and while I had an extended warranty, it was a $200 deductible and inconvenience with every issue. My 2008 Tundra DC was dead reliable for 8 years, hence the recent purchase.

I hate both Ford and RAM service department in any dealership. I don't want to bring any vehicle to them. But Toyota service I use is excellent. One and only reason to keep mine at 130k miles on it.

I am a Ram guy and loved all three of the ones I had. I am also one of the only guys I know who didnt have any issues with them. I loved my second one so much a good friend of mine sold his Ford and bought one. A year later he was lemoned out of it and back into a Ford. As a pretty heavy forum user in their world, I can tell you Ram has had some issues for years that most of the guys just fixed and moved on with. I miss my last Ram every day and would still be in it had that individual been paying attention.

honestly, under the right conditions I think I would go back. Especially in Florida with how well their cooled seats work compared to this brick I have now.

that said, i just drove from FL to SD and back, taking the long way and my only complaint was the fuel consumption. now that I adjusted my budget to offset the new expense, I am mostly happy with the tundra and my largest complaint is still the terrible cooled seats. It is stiffer and less fun to drive, but I have zero concerns with its reliability; not something I could say before.

Someone traded in a 2018 Tundra SR5 4x4 to my local Ford dealer with 32,500 miles on it and excellent OCD like service at the Toyota dealership via car fax report. They even did a induction service at 28,000 miles!

I traded in my 2022 Ford Edge ST back in for it. Nothing wrong with the Edge, just too many gadgets and Nanny systems that I know won't make it the 10 years I want to keep this "simpler" truck.

If you didn't know any better you would think this 2018 was brand new.

I don't see any of the new truck features will last long term. I'm talking about self steering (lane centering, parallel parking, auto trailer hook up etc). If the actuator for the steering wheel fails, can you even drive it? Also how expesive to replace? This is one of the reasons you see high end Mercedes, BMW and Land Rovers go cheap on the used market when they hit the 100,000 miles and above. Too expensive to repair those systesms.

Then again you trade vehicles before 100,000 miles, you shouldn't be worried about this.

My impression with those vehicles is that they often get leased for 2-3 years, driven hard, and then bought by people that don't look beyond the payments. Second owner then can't afford the general maintenance, drives them hard, and when something big inevitably breaks or comes due for service, trade them in or sell them cheap, the dealership makes them barely-legally-drivable again, and they in turn sell them cheap. So I don't think it's necessarily an electronics specific issue, but the whole damn vehicle overall gets neglected.

There are good dealers and bad ones for every brand. My local Toyota dealer is one of the bad ones. I would not even have my oil changed there if it was free. They send me stuff in the mail for low cost oil changes and they go straight into the recycle bin. When I drove nothing but Fords the dealer I bought from and used for service was a good one. It helped that I was on a first name basis with service manager and GM.

Every Ford I ever owned was new and every one was a lemon. 1999 Lariat F150 … 6 transmissions by 36k, 1993 Bronco front end issues, 99’ Cougar, left my wife stranded 3 times with under 10k miles.
My friend bought a Ram and I think my Tundra has much more room.

Isn't the new Bronco just a Ford Escape with new body panels? Think I saw that info floating around out there. Nobody gonna lead anyone on any kind of meaningful freeway chases in one of those!

Spend 10k and supercharge your truck with a Harrop or Magnuson. Truck will feel brand new according to those who have done it.

I am using a 2023 F150 for the next few weeks.

In many ways it is better than my 2.5 gen Tundra but many ways it is not.

    F150 pros:
    -Faster by far (Ecoboost)
    -Gets better MPGs
    -Softer suspension
-Car like which is nice in parking lots and tighter areas
    -Quiet

    2.5 gen Tundra Pros:
-Planted in the ass (the F150 feels like it had too much coffee)
-The interior is of slightly better quality
    -No odd rattles or noises
-Rear suspension sag (I measured: 200 pounds in the bed made the F150 sag almost double that of my god awful rear suspension **sarcasm** on my Tundra, 5 bags of 40 pound rock salt)
-tighter feel all the way around

The F150 is a very nice truck to be honest but definitely not enough to get me into one as a Tundra owner. Slight differences IMHO, no night or day differences as many outlets/owners/experts would have you believe…

EDIT: Turning radius is better on the Tundra. The Tundra requires more work in a parking lot however when you miss judge a turn in the Tundra it’s much easier to tighten the turn up to correct your mistake.

My brand new F150 years back went through 6 transmissions 36k miles and then I gave up and traded in on a Silverado… I requested Ford replace the truck and all I got was a loud NO!
Have never even thought about giving my money to Ford again.

I recently traded my 2017 F150 platinum for a 2020 SR5. Both had around 70k. I inherited the Ford in 2020 and had no issues with it. I just never trusted it. I have no regrets with my decision.

I also traded a 2020 F150 Platinum that I custom ordered. Never liked it from the moment I picked it up and I have owned nothing but F150's for the last 15 years. Decided to try a Tundra and will NEVER go back, this is the best truck I have ever owned. It may be thirsty and a little dated but it's a truck and it rides and feels like one. That's exactly what I wanted.

Just jumped from a F150. Owned it 23 months. 7k in repairs(4k covered by a warranty). 2 months of that 23 was in for repairs. Then it just kept going with more failures.

I trust they aren't all as bad as mine....as mine had 96k abused miles on it I think before I bought it.....really hoping my new to me Tundra treats me better.
