First Tundra Purchase

Hello All,

First post here, but I've been browsing a bit over the last month.

I'm finally at a point where I can afford a new truck. I've been looking at the Tundras, and I'm starting to form a relationship with my local dealer. Going in to test drive a few over the weekend.

I think the Tundra Platinum with the TRD Off-Road Package and 3" lift is what I want, but I have no idea if my local dealership will be able to request / allocate this specific of a build. I've read about the allocation process on this forum, but its still somewhat confusing to me.

My question is this. Given enough time (and I'm ok with waiting) will any dealer be able to fulfill my request, or will I have to go outside of my local area to get what I want? The population in my county is about 100k, so not a metropolitan area by any means.

Hard to answer that question if we don't know where local is. Most dealerships can order whatever you want. Doing the 3" lift depends if your dealership does that, you can have that done after you drive it off the lot. If you add your general location someone that's local can help you more answering your questions.

 

Thanks for the reply Jim. I'm in Eastern NC. I was thinking the lift would be factory, as there is an option for that on the Toyota website.

If it's one thing I learned about buying a new or used truck, if you have intentions on modding out your truck(which can be addictive) buy a somewhat base level trim where you'll be able to add modifications to it to make it as appealing as the more expensive trims. Not just visually appealing but performance and comfort included. Sure there may be something's you can't DIY to a TRD Sport that comes optional on a Platinum or even a TRD Pro like maybe a sunroof.
The 3" suspension you desire can be bought and installed aftermarket and give you far better results than OEM. You'll see just about everybody replacing their OEM parts for better aftermarket so that's something to consider but ultimately the choice is yours I think it will also make your search easier.

I've only bought my used Tundra a couple months ago and already have a few take-off parts from mods I've done. Suspension will be next.

 

dealers are starting to get inventory with the factory TRD 3" lift on the truck from the factory...it's a stand alone option $3995...you might have to travel a bit or see if your dealer can swap inventory or dealer exchange for a truck the way you want it

 

Welcome from the Great White North. Definitely work with your local dealer to see what they can do for you. They'll probably ask for a $500 deposit (refundable).

I would still look out of State to the point where you are comfortable to fly to and drive back. You may get a better deal, shorter delivery time or even use their quote to get a better deal with your local dealership.

 

Welcome from New England man,my population is way way under that and I didn't want deal with the hassle and blah blah blah.
I built mine & printed out what I would like and they put it in allocation, about 1 month later I was asked AVS or the 3" lift (there not compatible), anyway I thought that the 24's can come with the 3" lift?....

Thanks for the info. I've seen a few on here recommending the Westcott Designs lift kits, so I've given that some thought. Some have argued that having the dealership install such a lift could be problematic if that's not something they do routinely (why pay for them to learn on your truck). But, I bet it would make things a little easier during the allocation process.

 

It looks like I need to do some reading about AVS (Adaptive Variable Suspension?). Thanks for the info.

 

1. from what i have seen, 2024 plats with the avs are very rare

if you want to do an allocation reserve request here are the option codes you will need for the FIO (factory installed options)

all the rest are PIO (port installed options)

the FIO are not able to be added after the sale (they can be but the after sale cost is usually 3-5x the cost of having it installed at the factory)

HU = hud package
RB = automatic running boards + power bedstep package
NF = avs suspension
OF = trd off road package

on 2023/2022 the HU and NF option code was AQ (it was a combined package back then)

2022/2023 the OF package didnt exist

 

This is my first ever Toyota after 50 years of driving. I am used to the ordering process for European cars (BMW, Porsche) where you can spec a build and get exactly what you want. From my limited Toyota experience, you get what you see on the allocation and dealers take what they're allocated with little to no influence on the build. It is a frustrating process. I have been searching for 4 months and finally located an allocation (not yet in production) for exactly what I wanted (color, trim, bed, engine, FIOs) at a dealer 300 miles away. I have a relationship with my local dealer but really found them not very helpful to locate allocation matches or near matches. And for sure, no help outside of their region. I used the Toyota Search Inventory feature but even that is not accurate to show all the allocations available. And I searched nationwide. I searched dealers in each state nearby who have the highest volume. I feel I got lucky when I found an allocation that matched my specs and immediately phoned it in. It was probably the easiest sell the sales guy has made ever when he answered the phone that day. Allocation to delivery is about 2 months based on the limited details I have, but I do not mind waiting.

 

Yeah it was a tuff toss up between the two,I really like the AVS and the auto leveling,I don't do any hard-core off roading just beach terrain and winter snow.
Definitely pick and choose wisely, nobody has a crystal ball to predict the future so cater to what you think you'd do the most.

 

So is the AVS more for typical daily driving (which is what I'll be doing 90% of the time), just having a smoother ride overall? I've got plans for the beach, but I also want to go romp around in the dirt should time permit (thus the OR package and lift). Thanks again.

 

I was unfamiliar with the process until I bought my 2022. I waited 10 months for my dealer to get something similar to what I wanted. I ended taking a platinum without tow mirrors, and I ordered a 1794 with tow mirrors. The plat did have all the other options I was looking for.

 

If it'll be a DD the AVS might be what you'd like the downside is no Crawl mode,it has Eco,comfort, regular, sport,sport + and a custom mode, that you can create and save.
When you select a mode it will be shown in blue on the cluster for a reference.
The different modes will adjust the shifting points of the tranny,stiffin the steering and adjust all of the suspension.
Definitely read up what Toyota has come up with is really worth reading into and for the price your going to drop on one will make it a educated purchase for sure.

I love that thing, just yesterday I had sport+ going through traffic to get onto the on ramp, had fun through the on ramp turns and then once I was on the main road, flicked it to comfort for cruising, very nice.

and this thing handles 100% better than the last gen, really good for a 1/2 ton actually. Sport+ really tightens up the shocks and steering and spools boost FAST and shifts aggressive

 

Agreed I basically just use the comfort mode but like you mentioned getting on on ramps I jump to Sport +.
Sometimes around town just messing with people I'll leave it in sport+ but dump it in manual to get more out of the first few lower gears,man the motor generator is immediate and within a few seconds you feel the turbos have spooled up and kick in nicely...

Doc, first of all you're going to love the truck. All of the Usa brands are not selling and there is a good reason for that. they spend more time in the repair shop.
My 2023 Tundra runs flawlessly and has every piece of tech that a person can comfortable handle. That being said I would look on line at all the dealerships on the east coast/ Tenn/ Kentucky and see who has the truck you want. It is really no big deal to catch a $200 Frontier, Spirit, Southwest flight to almost anywhere and drive your new Truck back to NC. When I bought mine with the help a Toyota exec was willing to fly to California. Fortunately for me they got one on at a fairly local dealer and got mine there. Mt son just got a Toyota Cross and he went to Maryland from Nj to get his. So I would expand you search and you should find both the vehicle and competitive price. As far as your test drive, the Tundra is a very quiet ride once you have the artificial engine noise that the pipe into the speaker removed. Some people like the growl of the V8 engine that Toyota artificially pipes in thought the speakers. I had this taken out and the cabin is quite quiet with the engine sound removed. Hello Kid; I am looking to quiet down my cabin by removing the piped-in noise. How did you have this removed?
Is this something I can do myself, or is it a quick and cheap thing the Boys at the dealership can do?

I had the dealer take this out. I think it can be accomplished via menu option or a bi directional OBD reader. I preferred it without the piped in engine noise. Seems that most people like the loud v8 sound.

Would you have a photo of the dealer service receipt that shows the change they made for you that disabled the sound enhancement. Thanks.

 

I think the engine sound enhancement is controlled with this Techstream parameter.

No need for the dealer, Carista can turn-off the engine noise and leave the ANC on. Several threads about it.

 

I thought of getting Carista, but they want $9.99 per month.
My dealer called me and said he would remove the noise at no charge.
I'll find out what the results are tomorrow afternoon.

 

Buy one month then cancel. I find is cost less in time and fuel that going to the dealer. Several other items carista can change.

If the dealer works for you, just to it. I'm simply stating you do have options.

 

Yes and that's what most members here have done,including myself.
Also don't forget you can eliminate the seat belt warning, increase directional count,there's a whole thread on this topic just do a search for it.
