Tundra clunking into reverse help!

    I have an 08 tundra Crewmax 4x4, this past weekend I got stuck in the snow and after getting out and back home I noticed a clunk, I can feel it and hear it, it’s like it’s shifting hard into that gear, it happens very noticeably shifting from drive to reverse but not so much from reverse to drive, the truck drives perfect otherwise, no clunking or noise while driving, I greased all my u-joints and my slip yoke, checked fluid in diff and transfer case, I went under to look while my gf shifted it and it almost looked like the axle was sticking or binding then popping into place really quick, does anyone have any idea what this could be? The rear diff has some play before it catches which I’m assuming is normal and it seems like there’s minor play in the trans end, it never did this so prevalent and it’s driving me nuts any help would be greatly appreciated

    Had a cluck in the drivetrain in my 07 CrewMax 4x4, but it was more about starting from a start. Turned out to be the driveshaft carrier bearing.

    It only does it when I shift into that gear, when I move the truck nothing, just the initial shift, idk if I should be concerned or not

    Check the carrier bearing for play.

    I did, there’s little to no play in the carrier bearing

    Did you check the rubber trans and engine mounts? If one if the mounts is broken, it could be causing the clunking.

    Visual inspection looked good but I will check with a crowbar when I get home

    I had a “clunking” condition on my LX450 at one point. It has a grease fitting on the driveshaft spline joint, and it would get “hydro-locked” as the grease got older and stiff. Essentially the air could not escape as the two halves of the driveshaft compressed, and got to a point where it could no longer move/ compress. Solution was to remove the driveshaft, and pull the two halves apart and clean out all the old grease and insert fresh grease. It essentially became a “preventative maintenance” procedure every few years, but I was also off-roading it quite a bit back then.
