But wait ... Is the JBL OEM radio a new thing, or the original?

Did you do anything recently, install a backup camera, touch any of the wiring back there?

Yes. Last week I pulled that radio out to prep for a replacement. I then reinstalled it to wait until the new unit arrived. Some of the contacts where the small plug fits in the back of the radio were bent. Today I decided to unplug the wire harnesses to see if the R icon would go off. As soon as I unplugged the first harness the R turned off and the backup lights turned off. I'm hoping the problem was only in the radio but won't know until I attach the new harness for the new Boss radio.

Ahhhh, that makes much more sense now. Not a huge Boss fan, but @BluegrapeVr6 had a decent experience with his, may be able to give some feedback on install.

Alrighty i will try to help you with you low quality but functional boss stareo.
    - real quick: what model head unit? Just a back up camera?
You should only have to tie into two oem wires to get everything to work if you got the crutchfield harness.
    - per the boss install instructions, please verbalize what you have done. The only hard part about these kits ita locating the parking brake safety wire. If you move slow the kit will work. Its very important you dont do anything twice because each wire has 3 strands of crappy copper wire. Anything going under car wrao or heat wrap. I got your back. Mines been working great over a year.

I probably won't get to installing the Boss for a few days. Thank you for being available to help.

No prob, there are a few minor discrepencies. But with a test light and tracing wires you should be able to figure it out. Im not sure if my 2002 will have same color wiring. But crutchfield should be able to help. I found getting a good ground to be the hardest part.
