I left a 20 tundra v8 too but this truck is way more fun for me . I bought a platinum since I get bored easily . The old v8 is still great in my eyes though

Im the same Durtywrench . Just wanted a change after 2 tacomas and now my second Tundra.

Funny thing is my wife has the 2015 Toyota Highlander hybrid with no problems and It feels more solid in the interior. She would kill me if I suggested selling it and its hit over 190 miles .

The V8 ...just felt different...cant explain it .

I loved my 2012, drove the crap out of that thing for a decade with ZERO issues. It was comforting knowing no matter the weather, no matter what I towed....it was there and dependable. Stating that, after getting my 2022 1794 IMAX......thank god that heap of shit is gone from my life

My 2014 Tundra was fine, but it hunted for gears on slight hills and mild headwinds. The 14mpg wasn't amazing either.

I love the low end grunt and drivability of my 2023. I used to scream uphill at 3,000 RPMs going 65mph in the 5.7L. I'm only at 1,900 RPMs going 70mph going up the same 2 mile grade in the 3.4TT.

I'm also averaging 18mpg and get 22-23 highway. I really don't miss the V8 at all.

Both are great trucks, boils down personal needs and what you place value in. For me, happy mine will be paid off in a few years, generally speaking it should last a long time, does what I need it to, and in 10 years a small piece of history in my driveway. New style interiors of the new vehicles (all brands) are freaking awesome and appealing, but not something I personally value. Now my wife might be a different story lol. Had a Ford Expedition rental not too long ago in TX and the interior was lightyears ahead of my tundra, got me really thinking. In the end, truly happy to hop back in my dinosaur and it see me through a lot of future memories.

Edit: Most of us are toyota people, I'd say majority of us 1st gen through 3rd gen collectively value things differently.

Never had a 2nd gen but did have several 1st gen Tundras. Great size, smooth and reliable, no need for cameras to park. Still have a 99 Land Cruiser 4.7 V8 and 2003 Tacoma. But this 2023 1794 kills them in everything but visibility...still getting used to where the truck is in a lane and parking both distance from curb and lines... just can't see anything...totally dependent on mirrors and cameras...not sure how lower trim level owners park.

The only thing I miss from my old 2010 V8 is the throttle response. Naturally Aspirated engines cannot be beat for throttle response. Other than that, my 23 is better in every way.

Having both a 4.7 FGT and a 5.7 2.5G Tundra, I can relate to this. V8 engines are inherently smooth and balanced. V6 engines are not. There are some sweet V6s out there, I hope that the 3.4TT turns out to be one of them. Wish they went with an I-6 instead (modern JZ!), also an inherently balanced and smooth design. Also has more main bearing caps and makes a stronger engine.

    They can.

N/A engines unavoidably have a torque peak, while turbos (especially low pressure ones) have a wide torque shelf of nearly constant max torque. Of course the stock engine tune does not allow utilizing that in order to save fuel, but a simple fuel map change can make the throttle responding like it was back in days, when it was fully mechanical.

With N/A engine little can you do.

I was skeptical of trading my V8 for this TT 6, but after owning it for a while, Im totally sold, its better in everyway except exhaust sound, which isnt worth the trade off of all the other stuff.

it makes everything so effortless. Towing is night and day better.

I am not talking about powerband or torque at all, the 3.4tt is better in every way. Talking about crisp throttle response, and N/A engines can't be beat. No spooling, no throttle lag, no gear hunting, no logic trying to stay in higher gear to utilize the torque curve, etc. The 5.7/6speed can't be beat for throttle response.

Im not sure about your no gear hunting or logic trying to stay in higher gears, etc. That doesn't happen at all that I can tell

You could argue the V8 has to rev up higher and you have to wait to hit the torque peak longer since the TT6 hits peak much lower.

I get what your trying to say though.

I don't know. Both my Tundra and wife's Sequoia are lazy dogs, compared to my old Swedish turbo wagon. It runs like a scalded dog. I can spin all 4 wheels on a flat road in third gear.

holy shit, you and I agree on something, mark this day down.

While the yota 350 is a great engine, you do have to rev it up to get it to wake up.

It *feels* effortless, but it is under a great deal more stress. Whether that's worth the trade-off is subjective. I think most 3rd genners enjoy the feeling of confident power at low RPMs. It is inherently not as long lasting a system. But most people trade every few years, so it's not a big deal. It's nice there are options for us whether we prefer one or the other.
Yes it was designed to do so. But it was ahead of its time; it makes 90% of its peak torque at 2600 RPM. Not bad for a N/A v8. This v8 will pull anything within the truck's limits. That was never a concern for the 5.7.

All of us––2nd and 3rd genners alike––run out of payload before we get anywhere near a load that our trucks can't pull.

Throttle response? You have to wait for the fat torque converter to wind up on the 3UR.

Our 2013 is supercharged and my goodness is it a sweet motor. Effortless would be the word I would use to describe it. I am very curious how the tt 3rd gen feels in comparison.

All of the N/A V8's small shortcomings go bye bye with a Supercharger. I average 19mpg and have no lag. UNGODLY power throughout the entire rpm range, which makes any gear I'm in totally fun. And of course, the gnarliest, throaty, DD's dual exhaust just shames any piped in BULLSHIT. Proven reliability for a lifetime of worry free ownership. That's exactly how Toyota designed it, and why I bought my 17'. Perfect truck.

I drove a 3rd gen (I'm a Toyotoholic) and it has many "cool" things that would be nice to have, but the truck kinda stops being "Truck" and starts being a gadget mobile with a STUPID lake Michigan size hood on the front of that mofo! Jesus it's ridiculous!
It does drive extremely well though... Kinda like a big Cadillac.

When the 3rd gen has more time on the road, and we see the potential of what it has to offer, I'd be interested in looking at it. Right now the 3rd gen is an effort for Toyota to change their platform and try to accommodate new vehicle needs. They will continue to change and evolve the truck but the 3rd gen is an unfortunate 1st attempt at building a new truck and it just misses the boat for me.

NOT SAYING I DON'T LIKE THE 3RD GEN

    JUST THAT I LOVE MY SC'D V8!

This thread had me second guessing my 2.5 gen purchase. But now that I read @Toyotoholic ‘s response I will just pretend I am sc’d while out driving!

I do love the 3rd gens though, they got everything right feature wise imo that I wish I had.

I enjoy my 3rd gen enough to keep it. I think I'm just gonna buy a Mustang or something to satisfy the V8 craving and I can have a lot more fun with that.
