Our 2017 Tundra has been an excellent vehicle for almost 7 years.
Recently, engine light came on, we took it in to our mechanic shop right away. They did a quick check because they were busy, but on 2nd check 2 days later, they ran it through a detail check. Testing the truck out, it made a noise & just quit on the hwy.!
We are told it needs a complete new engine! Only 62000 +- miles on the truck!
Has anyone out there had this experience? This is just so unusual, stunning! HELP!

Sorry to hear. What was the code? What was the maintenance history?

I'd be SO MAD if my truck had an issue like this. They're so vanishingly rare; it would be completely unexpected.

It sounds like it completely died while your mechanic was on a test drive? That would make me very suspicious...

I have my suspicions - but let’s see what the codes were.

@GraceX20 , I moved your thread to the proper sub forum and deleted the other thread you posted in General section. This will get you the most exposure and help.

Sorry to hear about this engine issue, but before I would put any money up:

-What codes where triggered in the ECM?
-Why does the engine need to be replaced? Mechanic explanation please.
-Is this a Toyota specific mechanic?

The 5.7L motor is very tough and this is nearly unheard of. Mostly it's very high mileage timing chain, valve spring, or abuse with extended oil changes. I would definitely have more detail that what you have shared with us. You live just north of this guy, so if you need some advice or shop's that are honest...let me know. A second opinion should be had.

Holy guacamole. From a plea for help and understanding to a new (re-man) engine ordered. In 1 hour and 2 minutes. GraceX20 you must have been convinced it is terminal. Best of luck.

    Kirk out.

This is where my head is at. My money says there was a misfire code in the cylinder with a broken valve spring and the valve let loose when they were test-driving allowing the valve to get intimate with the piston. Lot of work to pull a valve cover that early diagnosing but probably would have been the only shot at saving the engine.

I'm with you there. It might have been a salvageable situation...and on the test drive it went. Still hoping this is not the case.

I had this happen on my Common Rail Cummins motor from a crappy dealership. What a nightmare that was.

Thank you, checking further on all these questions. Our truck is a 5.7L engine, w/tow-haul pkg. we live at altitude; pull our 5000 lb travel trailer once or twice /year.
We have excellent maintenance history on our truck; timely oil changes, etc.
And no, not specific Toyota mechanic, but very reputable.

First thing I'd do is take it someplace else, anywhere else, and get a second opinion.

    Yeah, really hope not.
Little late for that, having already ordered an engine and all. I’m assuming this is a VERY trusted mechanic.

Given your use case and excellent maintenance an engine failure claim from a mechanic, regardless of who, is highly suspect. That engine is really tanky and this kind of sudden and complete failure, especially when it's not even into 6 figure mileage, is so rare.... Like others said, unless there is abuse or terrible maintenance the 5.7 is as close to bulletproof an engine as any.
