I was running erands today and noticed that the black door side mounding was flopping loose on the driver's side rear door. I looked at the other pieces and they were loose in a few places also. Both front a rear doors.

This is a 2024 Platinum with TRD OR Package.

I removed one side with the intent of applying better double sided adhesive and replacing them, then took a step back and thought the truck looked better without them, so I removed the other side as well!

This is a six week old truck....pretty shoddy! I am super happy the truck otherwise. Hopefully an isolated incident.

I don't understand how or why the black ones keep failing, alot here were saying it was due to high/warmer temps I could see that and the OP lives in a warmer climate but really, I'm guessing the average temp where you are in the upper 70's & lower 80's this time of year.
The black moldings can't be absorbing that much heat for them to come off so quickly or easily for that matter and Toyota can't be using a different tape for the silver ones.

    Off topic
OP those gutter down spouts/chains are pretty slick.

My 2024 platinum door badging is practically falling off. I was going to submit a warranty claim, but now I’m thinking just remove it and call it a day.

I'm in No. Arizona, elevation 5,000 ft, so our temps are 20's for lows and 50's for highs this time of year. Yeah, those chain 'downspouts' are a thing here. Interesting when they are frozen solid with ice.

The back side of the moulding is highly ribbed, so there is little surface area to make contact with the adhesive. That's the failure mode in my opinion. Perhaps the silver moulding is flat, not ribbed?

I don't know what's behind the silver one's I have left mine on and there holding good, maybe someone here has removed there's and could chime in on this.
I have pretty much de chromed mine and wanted the door spears black to keep the black & white theme going, but kinda glad that they didn't come in black or have that option, because I would have chosen black.
The bottom line is that for them to fail so quickly or at all for that matter is truly disappointing and frankly unacceptable period.
Going back on my memory roladex I don't think that and reputable manufacturer has ever produced a line with faulty exterior "bling" trimmings.

Does the platinum badge section come apart or is it all one piece?

I believe you, but I am still curious about what the back of the trim piece looks like.

Interestingly I spent my entire career working for 3M, and might know a thing or two about adhesives. 3M does not make cheap tape. What was used here is a low grade of closed cell double sided foam tape. Quite sure not from 3M. There was good bond from the tape to the painted door panels. Very poor bond from the tape to the moulding. If you look at the photo below you will see why. The grooves / ribbing on the back of the molding provided almost nothing in terms of surface area for the tape to adhere to. After a breach or two, moisture and dirt would enter the exposed grooves and accelerate the adhesive failure. When I removed the moulding, water literally spilled out from the grooves. Add the fact that the moulding is black and will expand/contract in the presence of sunlight and the problem gets worse.

I have no clue why anyone would design a part this way. Pretty disappointing that Toyota knows this is an ongoing issue and has not taken any corrective action.

The 'Platinum' piece can be removed, but as you can see is designed to fit inside the other moulding piece and has tabs to keep it together.

Excellent! Probably way more trouble than it's worth to put the 1794 emblem in the black trim but it does sound doable.

    Thank you for the photos.

Good information and glad you chimed in,so this gives me hope that I can order the black set remove the adhesive and trim level drop in Capstone badge modify the backing and then use 3M 2 sided tape.

I would add that freeze/thaw cycles in cold climates can be part of the issue too. My 2012 Silverado had similar door molding that was coming off after about 8 years of sitting outside. Any water trapped in the foam tape would freeze and expand pushing the molding away from the door. Wash, rinse, repeat and the problem just gets worse.

I was thinking of removing these as well. Was it difficult? How did you do it? Did it leave any marks or residue?

    Thanks

I'd use a heat gun to loosen the adhesive first, then they pull off pretty easily. Or just park the truck in the sun on a hot day first. There will be some of the crappy double sided foam tape they use left on the doors. You can roll most of that off with your thumb, or again use a heat gun to make it easier. Hit it with some 3M Adhesive Remover or Goo Gone to clean things up and you're done.

As mentioned above, I always prefer to remove after sitting in the sun. I will double or triple some dental floss and start “sawing”. I get nervous about the heat guns, but as long as you’re careful it will be good to go. These trucks look so much better without that trim on the doors. And rid yourself of that ugly black film on the A pillars while you’re at it. That greatly improves the look in my lowly opinion. It took me about 5 minutes total to remove mine.

seems like I am not the only one wanting to take out the chrome. Any chance you have been looking for ways to black chrome everything that is chrome?

I left the door molding since I didn’t want to mess with alignment of the new pieces. I may eventually wrap it or go to a body shop but tbh I think the single strip of chrome looks decent. Much better than the whole chrome package.

These trucks look a LOT better without all that goofy plastic taped to the doors. I always preferred the de-badged look. I get that some people get freaked out if other drivers don’t know what trim their vehicle is, though.
