2006 Tundra Double Cab 2wd. Code says range sensor. Is range sensor the same as neutral safety switch?

My mechanic looked at the code (I didn't see the number) and said Range Sensor. The vehicle starts and runs fine. The R position light stays on all the time.

The shift position lights in the gage cluster. The Reverse light is always on.

Ha! Called it. Found a similar issue in the second gen forums. It turned out to be the user had installed led bulbs in the reverse lights that caused the issue. You havent done similar have you? Check your bulbs and the reverse lights fuse as well.

But what is the actual code stored in the ECU? So we can look at the FSM and tell you what Toyota says to replace?

I don’t have a code reader. I have to borrow one and check again. I did put two T5 led bulbs in the HVAC controls.

Did this problem start right after you put the LED's in? LED'S do funky things to our trucks sometime.

General rule of thumb: If this started right after your last change, undo the last change and confirm if problem still exists.

Can’t get back to this until Monday. I’m going to test the reverse bulbs, I’m sure they are not working but could still be good.

Ok. New bulbs in the dash. Reverse bulbs are good. Still no backup lights while in reverse, check engine light and R are lit.

Reverse lights are working. Tuck runs fine. Check engine light nda R still on. Think I need a scan then neutral safety switch.

    This thread is properly named.
    I am confused too.

we cannot help you if you don’t provide details.

    is the truck drivable?

what happens when you move the shifter to different positions? Do multiple indicator lights come on?

are the reverse lights always on? does the truck truly believe it is in reverse or is the indicator light just stuck on?

Do you have any water leaks in the cab?

    The truck drives fine.

Only the R light and D light are on when driving.

    Reverse lights are always on.
Water leak from the air inlet servo motor.

Not the servo motor. It's from the cowl fastener dripping water into the fresh air intake, which then floods the blower motor, and drips out into the passenger floorboard. The part to fix the leak is like a dollar or something, and the part numbers and info are in the Definitive Leak thread (see stickies)

That's wild. So your reverse bulbs are lit even after you've shifted into drive? That's odd.

The neutral safety switch was bad so that has been replaced. The R icon in the gauge cluster is still lit even when the ignition is off. The backup lights are on anytime the headlights are on. My mechanic thinks the bad neutral safety switch may have damaged the ECM.

Did this start after replacing the switch? I recall reading on here, there's a certain way you need to "clock" the NSSwitch or you'll get weird ass stuff happening.

Also, isn't there a wire that people tap to get a reverse signal to reverse camera screens in the dash? It sounds like that got energized(or grounded) and is back-feeding into the indicator and lights. Maybe? Who's our wiring diagram guru now? @w666? @daveeasa?

I believe it's a green wire, red stripe. Purelyl going from memory, which is slowly dying from aphasia though.

Fixed. I removed the factory JBL radio and everything started working normally. bmf4069 was correct about back feeding.
