Hey all, I just ordered a new 150amp alternator for my 2007 with the 5.7 from Toyota Parts Olathe:

    https://parts.olathetoyota.com/oem-...kcmEmeT0yMDA3JnQ9bGltaXRlZCZlPTUtN2wtdjgtZ2Fz

It is listed as NEW, and therefore didn’t charge me extra for a core as Remans do. Did I just luck out with my timing here? Seems like I looked a few months ago and the same site listed Reman alternators. Not knocking remans but I’ll take OEM new anytime.

I replaced mine 3 years ago. I have no idea what brand I got from Amazon.

    50k miles and no issue.

If you have not done the job yet, make sure you have a full day to do the job.

The alternator is bolted to the block behind the power steering pump.

    The job sucks.

I pulled the radiator, fan, radiator shroud just so I had room to gain access to the prick.

It took me 5 hours...and I have a car hoist.

I'm sure peeps that do the job often can do it quicker, but it was my 1 St time.

Another thing that should be noted.

The bolt holes that hold the alternator to the block have steel bushings.

My new alternator did not have those bushings. I had to remove them from the old unit. Of course they were corroded to the aluminum of the old unit.

I ended up destroying the original alternator to get those bushings free.

I anti seized those bushings so they would not corroded to the new alternator.

    Hope this info helps.

Thanks for the info on the bushings. I’ve watched several vids on it, and it indeed looks to be a bitch. Maybe a little worse than the one I did on the 4.7 on my wife’s GX470. Similar idea of having to drop alternator from the bottom.

Like you, I plan to remove the lower radiator hose and fan shroud to give extra working space, might even remove the radiator too.

I wish I knew why Toyota elected to place the alternator in such a bad spot on both the 4.7 and 5.7 engines.

    I think that all time!

It's a horrible location for something that can need service.

Just got the part in, it does indeed appear to be new, not reman. Manufactured by Denso in Tennessee. Now for the not so fun part of installing the thing.

You may get weird idling after the install, which is the ECU relearning. It usually takes a few trips for it to get back to normal.
However, you can also turn it ON and OFF twice (not starting the engine) and start the engine the third time.
Make sure you have the e-brake on and put it in drive. It should take a few minutes for it to idle properly. Mine took only 20 seconds.

Finally got it done, man that was a PITA! Removing the power steering pump gave me the most trouble. All the vids show using a pry bar to pull it towards you from the passenger’s side, they made it look so easy. Unfortunately mine did not want move at all. I finally ended up using a very long pry bar and hit the pry bar with a mallet from the drivers side to get it to budge. Definitely a feeling of accomplishment to get it done myself, and definitely not a job I would want to do on the side of the road.

Congrats! My shoulders and fingers were hurting for a week after.
The good news is you will never have to do it again!
