I recently picked up a 2021 SR5 with the base-model steel wheels. I know from prior experience that the TPMS sensors in the steelies can't be used in the TRD OR rims, due to the wheel shape.

I did the same wheel swap with my 2016, and in that truck I just bypassed the sensors. But I like how this 2021 model will tell me the exact pressure in all four tires, and I would like to keep that feature intact.

How can I determine what sensors to buy for these wheels? Or should I just roll up in the tire store, and buy my way out of the headache?

It's best you go to your local Toyota dealership and order it from them. Or go to your local tire installer and order it from them. They can best help you on the spot if there's any issue that might come up.

If you order the wrong ones yourself, it can be a bigger headache getting it sorted out. Good luck...

If you are getting your tires from a reputable place, they should be able to get the correct sensors and do everything including syncing them when they do the install. Just be up front about what you need so they have time to get the sensors if they don't have them on hand.
