Let's say someone installed a nice big aftermarket headunit with a floating 10" screen, and it really highlights how low-quality the 2.5gen backup camera is.

Now let's suppose they did some thinking and decided it'd be nicer to put a license-plate bracket held backup camera in instead, allowing them to use much higher video quality cameras that attach at that point, and also centering the camera to the actual middle of the truck, and putting it lower and closer to the hitch for easier trailer hookups. This also means the camera works when the tailgate is lowered, not that one can advocate for driving with it down, sometimes it's a thing regardless!

Now let's say you want to just unplug the factory camera, and plug in a plug-and-play harness that runs this aftermarket camera. I see two potential issues:

One, the stock camera is 6V. I can't help but wonder if a lot of aftermarket cameras need 12V. Alright, not a dealerbreaker, running 12V from somewhere to the tailgate isn't an insurmountable demand. Second challenge, finding the right connectors and pinout for making a plug-and-play solution.

Anyone looked into this or have any experience with the idea? I don't hate my reverse camera, but man, it'd be nice to have it be more useful in its location and better quality never harmed anyone.

It also occurs to me, right after I submitted this, that guys running bigger camper shells or camper toppers that relocate the backup camera with the tailgate more permanently deleted, might've already solved this, feel free to steer me in those directions as well!
