I picked up a used set of the 18” Tundra off-road rims. I want to get them powdered all black like the Pro model rims.

Can anyone comment on the long term durability of powdered coat rims, five years or more? I saw a bunch of photos in threads that were freshly powder coated but not many after five years or more of use. Normal use with, nothing off-road besides a few gravel roads for hunting season.

The local powder coat shop said they sandblast, apply primer then color and a clear top coat. $350 for the set.

Will it be nearly as durable as the factory black powder coat?

These were powder coated 16 years ago. Picture is from a few months ago. I’ve put over 150k miles on them since they got coated.

    I appreciate the information.

I know you’re not supposed to use any harsh chemicals on the powder coat for cleaning. Do the rims clean up easy enough with regular car wash soap? Any concerns with tire cleaner getting onto the rims when cleaning?

I have not treated mine kindly. They still clean up great. Just use the car wash mitt. They don’t care about tire shine.

Do you purposely avoid normal wheel/tire cleaning sprays?

I don’t use any tire or wheel cleaner. Just wash the wheels with the wash mit and the tires with a brush. Occasionally some tire dressing to black the tires up a bit. I melted the paint off my moms wheels with some heavy duty cleaner once.

I’m happy to hear that they clean up that easy.
