I ended up back at the dealership and purchased the 2021 Tundra. After driving it back home from dealership, 2hr drive and then going on a 6 hour round trip family visit, the truck is just passed 14,000 miles. I don't know if I'm being overly critical or if these engines are known for making ticking noises? Anybody have any input/experience with this? It almost sounds like a lifter or timing chain issue. I visited dealer twice and did a couple test drives and walk arounds never did I hear it until after I got back from traveling this past weekend.

Congrats on the truck. It looks great.

Yeah, 3URFE has a quiet little valve clicking noise; but without hearing yours, I wouldn't say it's normal. It's worth a trip to a shop that handles Tundras to let a mechanic give a listen.

If you search 5.7 tick or diesel noise, you'll get tons of threads. It is just a noisy engine. It is very normal and can be quieted by running 5W-30.

no Mods... has new headlights and some dings on the side... just purchased a dent puller and Bilstein 5100's for it..... absolutely love it in the 2 weeks I've owned it...
lol I'm going to be funny here.... but 14k? the motor isn't even broke in.... I had 97 taco with a 4 banger and that thing sounded like what you described and I asked a Japanese friend of mine who smiled and laughed at me and said the motor isn't even broken in!! It had 50k on it.... you know he was right.... those 2.4 are legendary gutless wonders! lol CarCareNut on YouTube mentioned on a recent video that it was his first time working on one and it had a touch over 200K and it had a snow plow attached to the truck.

I currently have a 2uz motor in my 1st gen and I was listening to it and I'm not sure if its broke in yet?? it has 225k on it.... so turn the radio on and drive it.... with that amount of mileage it should still have a solid warranty and get excited when the warranty is at its end if you want to?? Toyota builds really good motors..... I was living New Orleans and I was driving my 22r truck to work one afternoon on I-10 and I knew I needed to replace the timing chain... forget the mileage? maybe 240k but I was driving and I let off the throttle abruptly and that thing backfired so hard it killed the engine, sounded like a gun shot at point blank (zero tolerance motor mind you) rolled into the park lane and waited a minute and thought what would be the harm in trying to start it again? Probably already toast.... started it and drove it to work and after my shift ordered a new timing chain and then I replaced it! Drove that truck another 2 years and sold it... it literally is probably still out there running! This has been 15 years ago....

After a day you've may have gained so more clarity on the situation; so enjoy your truck!! Money well spent!
