    Hi all,

In Maine, we just went through some serious floods and power outages. I had to use a plastic gas can to put some gas in my 2018 Tundra SR 4.6L. When I finally got a chance to go to a gas station with power, the fuel nozzle clicked and did not allow me to fuel up normally.

I never top-off my gas when fueling as I know it would damage the evap canister. Any thoughts on what happened? I looked at the filler neck and did not see any obvious problems. Here's a picture of my canister that I fear I may need to replace now.

The rollover valve may have rolled over. Valve prevents gas from coming out but can also prevent gas from going in.

Follow the filler neck down to the top of the fuel tank. Loosen the hose clamp and pop off the hose. There is a plastic siphon guard near the top of the tank and about 6” below that is the valve. Take something long and skinny (skinny enough to fit through the siphon guard) and roll the valve back over. You’ll know you’re successful when you can get past the valve. This can be done without lifting the truck or removing anything else.

I don’t think the fuel can had anything to do with it, I use my plastic fuel can all the time to put left over gas from my dirt bike in when I’m done riding with no issues.

You may have to gangsta twist fill it, lol. May just be a specific pump, or go to a different station and try it out. I think we all go through this at some point in time. I've had to do this when the normal way wouldn't fill and just kept getting kicked off.

I can’t see how using a gas can would damage the charcoal cannister. Inside the cannister is a cloth bag filled with a million 1mm charcoal pellets. If the bag deteriorates those little pellets will end up everywhere and clog the purge valve, the vent valve and even end up in the fuel tank. Ask me how I know.

Will I have a problem if I always fill the tank to full ?

The idea is not to repeatedly keep pumping after the nozzle auto shuts off because then some liquid fuel can get into the vent line and deteriorate the cannister. Personally I usually do one top off after it shuts off and leave it at that unless I’m on a trip and want max range then I’ll get it really full. I like that the FGT had the cannister in the engine compartment.

Question. Is there a vent valve solenoid in my evap canister that can be replaced, or is it part of the canister?

I took the truck to my local independent Toyota only mechanic and he said wait for a check engine code to diagnose what the problem is instead of replacing stuff. I get the concept, but it takes forever to fill up my gas tank.

If I can replace the vent solenoid, if there is one, I could avoid this frustration. Thoughts?

It’s also my understanding that the purge valve at the top of the engine would not cause the gas nozzle to keep clicking. Is that correct?

Did something get into the filler tube?

The evaporator canister should not be causing the slow fill.

Actually, if the evap canister is clogged, a slow fill can happen. Fuel fumes have nowhere to go, slowing down or shutting off while filling.

Then the truck will have a check engine light.

I think there is missing info.

    Can more details be supplied?

No engine codes at all. It just clicks off every time I squeeze the gas nozzle trigger.

I just unplugged the vent hose that connects to the canister and made sure that it was not plugged by running a 3 foot zip tie up the hose. I also used the same 3 foot zip tie and ran it down the filler neck and could hear a click then smelled gas.

I also just plugged in my OBD2 wireless scanner and there are no pending codes either. I will keep that plugged in for a few days to see if the evap emissions tests runs.

I priced a new canister and it’s about $700. Would like to not have to spend that amount if possible.

The problem is at what point does the check engine light come on? There will be tell tale signs first that something is wrong before the CEL stays on. A total evap system fail will definitely trigger the CEL.

Did you read @Cruzer ’s post? The roll-over valve flipping is a known issue on these trucks.

This is the rollover flapper valve in the tank. It’s probably stuck.

Great pic of the anti siphon grid above the flapper valve as well.

Now you know why it's difficult to siphon gas from a Toyota...you also know why gas theves just drill a hole in the tank as well.

Does the valve get pushed straight down or does it hinge on one side?

Did you try slowing the fill up? Like half squeeze the gas pump trickling it in? Had some scumbag that cut my fuel line in my 08 to steel $50 worth of gas and I had to macgyver a bridge with a pastry squeeze in the local grocery store where I was filling up until I was able to replace the line. Had to half squeeze the pump in order to fill up and be careful not to surge it

I did! Sorry for the delay.

Someone stuffed a paper towel down my filler neck! I did everything as suggested, and the problem still existed. I brought it to a local shop, and they removed the filler neck and yanked out a damn paper towel! I am researching a locking gas door now, as it costs me $116 to fix this problem. I don't think I have an enemies. I don't know...
