Remote started the Tundra, -33 feels like -67. Turned over slow but fired up. Didn't expect the cabin to be warm with two 10 minute warm ups and wasn't disappointed. Bonus, it started.

 

Nice. Heated steering wheel is soo nice in this weather too. No more switching hands back and forth from pocket to steering wheel

 

In the past, I might have been known to drive with mittens on as gloved fingers weren't warn enough for me.

Do you guys not have block heaters? I learned about those back in the day when we moved to Idaho... what on earth are those wires coming out of car grills with regular electrical plugs? A couple months later I understood when my car wouldn't start for 2 weeks during a cold spell with many subzero nights.

 

Yes, Canada trucks come standard with Block Heaters, extra $ on purchase, and are mandatory on new car.purchases, at least in MB from that I know.

I plug in when it hits -15 or lower. No garage. It's currently ,-27c

New batter installed last week, 27F. Remote start installed last March, so this is my first winter with it

Fired up no problem and I always leave the climate controls on high heat before I get out.

I roasted him in a post....he can't get over it. He loves me deep down.

 

I usually have a goose neck trailer attached in the winter to haul hay to one of the herds. When my truck sits outside, I use a space heater in the cab with an outdoor timer on the extension cord. I start the space heater about 3 hours before I have to head out. The space heater sits on the center console. Cab is warm when i get in & the ice or snow has melted off the windshield. I don’t have a block heater. Truck always starts in cold weather. This morning it was -30 F at 5:30 am. The cows were happy to see me I think.

 

We didn't get a block heater in ours. I guess the BC trucks don't get as cold. We have dipped down to about -13 with a windchill putting us around -20. The truck doesn't seem to mind the cold and starts right up.

 

Yes I have the RAM dually truck. It also tows a trailer load of hay out to a herd when it’s not in the shop for a recall.

 

In my Marine Buddy's Chevy Pickup... It's a Chevy so not sure on accuracy...

 

Which system did you go with? And did you install it yourself? Meanwhile we are to have lows in the teens here this coming week. It will be a shock to our systems, even though this is nothing compared to you Canuks, Idahoans, and Dakotans.

 

I have a 2019, so it wouldn't be the same model. But I went with StartX for both my truck and my wife's 2020 RAV4 push button start. Hers kills the engine when she opens the door, mine keeps running, which I prefer.

Both were super easy to install ourselves and have been rock solid. Range is based on Toyota key fob range.

Those won't help us 3rd genners since we already have FOB remote start standard. Any aftermarket system I get will need to be long range, like the old Clifford in my Tacoma.

Edit: they DO have a long range RF option that I will need to check out and compare to Accessorides.

 

the wife is dog/house sitting this weekend and the truck has not moved in roughly 1-1.5 days and over night it was -25F. needless to say tried starting it about hour ago and the battery is dead. put a charger/trickle charger on it (it defaults to charging, then once the battery is up to charge, to auto switches to trickle mode(.

stopped by wendy to pick up a spicy chicken and on the way back checked the amp pull on the charger and it dropped from 9.7 amps down to 2.7 amps. will go back in about hour to start it and drive it out to base (15 miles @ 70 mph 1 way) and back to warm up the fluids and dry out the muffler.

I was talking with some friends last night (one is from Chicago) and it occurred to me that I have never ever in my life experienced what 0º feels like, let alone negatives.

I think the coldest I've ever been in is probably in the teens. (And I'm perfectly fine keeping it that way.)

Having lived in San Diego my entire life, I think parts of me would just freeze and fall right off in negative temps.

 

You don't know what you are missing. Christmas 2022 here in MD we had some of that for a few days with lows below zero and highs only in the low 20s. Good old polar vortex or some such. GF's master bathroom plumbing froze up and cracked the pipes. The genius builders had CPVC pipes running in an outside wall and not enough insulation for this weather. We stayed home Christmas day as they thawed out when the sun hit that wall and when they started to leak shut off the master, then I opened up the wall and capped the broken pipes upstream of the breaks. Then over the next few months I had the pleasure of redoing the plumbing then the drywall, then the paint etc. Left the drywall off until winter was over to keep the pipes warmer and avoid a repeat. You SD'ers with the best weather in the country have no idea.

I recommend one of these battery tenders if you have a vehicle that sits for awhile. I have one in my car. With the tender and a block heater, no problems firing up the car even after sitting foe two weeks in a deep freeze.

I have a buddy that lives in Hinton. It's supposed to go to -45 to -50 C (-49 to -58 F) with windchill tonight. Damn cold!

 

Yikes! That’s cold, we are sitting at -3 but the windchill makes it feel like -6 burrr!

Supposed to be back up to +11 this week but rainy!
