2008 5.7L, 6 speed won't shift into "s" mode

Just like the title says. Whenever I go to shift the truck into "S" mode, it won't budge. I can get it into S mode fine if I slam it, but there's no way that's normal.
I took apart the plastic housing to see if there was something lodged in there, but there's nothing that i can see. I drove a VW once and I had to push down on the shifter to get it into S, but there's nothing like that here, unless I'm missing something?
