RR door won’t open from inside after messing with child lock

So one day a few months ago, I discovered this little toggle switch on my passenger rear door. It has a lock symbol with a baby on it - child safety lock, right? So I flip it. As expected, door would only open from the outside. Flipped it back and went on living. A few days/weeks later, don’t remember specific timeline, wife tells me the back door won’t open. At all. I went out and, without really touching it, told her what I’d done and that I must’ve forgotten to flip it back. Then I pull the handle, opens right up. Then again, a couple of weeks ago, she informs me that it’s doing the same thing again. So I go to oreillys and tell the guy. Felt stupid when he said “hit the unlock button” and I did and it opened. Got home, decided to show her, found that it still only opens from the outside. What the heck is going on here, and how do I troubleshoot?

 

Messing with it now. When I engage the toggle again, there is a different sound. So it is engaging and disengaging by the sound of it. Flip it down, no “click” inside - engaged. Flip it up, “click” when I pull the handle - disengaged. Still doesn’t open from inside
