Gas mileage sucks

In my new 2023 1794 Tundra. I fell like my transmission is the issue, starts in 4th gear and doesn’t go past 8th.
I shift from dead stop to shifter, it’s on 4th, on Hwy at 80 I go to shifter, it’s in 8th??

I move it on to 10th and gas mileage improves?

dealer said nothing wrong?

 

Im new to a 23 1794 as well, how do you know what gear it’s in?

 

Your transmission is normal. When you pop it over at a stop it says 4 but it’s not in four (it will not go over 4 if you leave it there). When your on the highway your probably in 9 and when you switch it over it drops it to 8. You should feel it drop down when you do it. The truck hardly gets in to 10. You have to be going like over 80 to feel or see the rpm drop. Not sure what your gas milage is but what your seeing from the sequential shift is how it’s supposed to be. It’s not the same set up as other vehicles you may have driven.

 

Normal. Same with earlier gen trannys. My Frontier with the 9 speed is the same.

 

The manual shifter only dictates what the highest gear the tranny will go in to. It's still automatically shifts in lower gears. So, when you select manual shift mode at a dead stop, the truck will still start out in 1st gear, then automatically shift into gears 2, 3, and 4, but it won't go any higher than 4th gear, unless you manually shift it into a higher gear.

On the highway, manual shift mode sets the initial gear to 8, to prevent over-revving the engine. From there you can manually shift higher or lower.

What do you consider gas mileage that sucks? What MPG are you getting? Do you have any mods like bigger tires?

 

i'm surprised the dealer didn't explain how what you think you're doing isn't actually what the truck is doing

 

Another one...c'mon people you don't buy trucks for fuel economy. If that's your concern then sell your manhood and buy a prius.

 

I drive between 40K and 60K miles per year for work, and I can tell you fuel economy is a concern when your filling up and driving that much, and simply switching to a car isn't possible because I need my tools and 4x4 when I get to the job sites.

I know I didn't post this, but it seems a bit condescending say that anyone who has a new truck and is concerned with the mileage should just sell it and buy a car.

 

Or maybe manufacturers can actually state real world mileage rather than some made up pie in the sky number that people won’t actually get.

 

Not to argue, but I am getting exactly what they said I would, 19mpg overall.

 

19 is excellent for any full sized truck! So is that mileages when the truck is loaded up with tools and loaded down with lumber and sacks of concrete?

 

Nope, I roll to work unloaded for a management job, do truck and home stuff on the weekends and side jobs, so then I load it up. That lifetime also includes about a 1000 miles of towing at about 7-9 mpg out of 36k altogether.

 

15 here. On a good day.

 

18-19 avg on mine, I travel with a bed full of tools constantly too. I'm light on the throttle, do a ton of highway driving.

I researched extensively. If I still lived in a place where I drove longer distances, I'd be in a GMC 1500 Denali Ultimate with the 3.0 diesel. The research is clear, that truck gets the best fuel economy of any full size truck.

There are some days I still wish I bought that truck, but I chose to buy into the brand of reliability instead. We'll see if that gamble was accurate in a few years. After my last Superduty, I was willing to trade performance for not knowing my service department's kid's dog names.

 

I am 21-22.5 tank average on every tank. Except during temperature extremities during heat of summer and winter.

 

You think owning a pickup truck makes you a man?

 

The manufacturer's rating on the MPG's come from a very specific set of variables and environment that produce the best possible mpg's. The hwy mpg typically comes from a flat road, near sea level, 50-60 mph, no a/c, eco mode, empty payload, and usually from a 2wd truck, etc. If you want to completely change your driving behavior/truck setup you can get great mpg's from these trucks. No remote starts, no idling, no stop and go city traffic, no lift, no bigger tires, no payload, no punching the throttle, avoid hills or elevation changes, etc. On a longer highway trip put it in eco mode, cruise at 60 mph and you'll probably be more impressed.

Also I have personally found that my true mpg calculations are actually 1-2 mpg better than what the truck says. My 2020 Tacoma got 16 average and the best I ever saw was 18. The first time I drove my Tundra to work, 60 mile highway drive and a 4000' elevation gain, I got 17 up the hill and 26.7 back down. My last trip to the dealer for the lift install, 120 miles with almost 2000' elevation drop, was 20.8 down and 17.6 back up with the lift and the front spoiler removed. I also intentionally cruise at 70-72 for better mileage instead of being in a hurry.

 

Haha, not necessarily but I certainly wouldn't feel like one in a prius...more of a jab at the prius than a flex on the truck.

 

Ditto …….right until I changed out my tires which cost me 2 mpg. I can live with it.

 

Back roads at 35-40 gets me mid 20s. I've seen 27+. Best I've ever done on a long trip was 20.0 over ~280 miles with a few mountain passes at 75-80 mph. Most of the time, I'm getting 11-16 mpg, but I usually let the vehicle warm up quite a bit if I can.

It gets equivalent fuel economy to my 4Runner while weighing 1000 lbs more, which is impressive.

 

Not on its own. You also need to eat large amounts of smoked meat (preferably from animals you killed yourself), drink black coffee, enjoy fine scotch whiskey, and own a big gun (or 6 or whatever).

I think there's other things like honor, chivalry, courage, charity, being nice to kids and dogs etc involved in being a man too but they're not as important.

 

my wife’s 2023 25th anniversary AWD sienna has a higher payload than our crewmax tundras and gets 35mpg easy, plenty of room for tools etc

Yeah, but it's still a minivan.

 

Just offering a practical solution

you can even sit back and relax and watch tv while you eat lunch

plus 1500 watt inverter

 

Look, we're trying to be real men here. "Practical" solutions like minivans are unacceptable!
