You just gotta understand LEDs don't do well replacing blinking bulbs or dual filament bulbs, without resitors. They're fine replacing constant bulbs.
I won't pretend to understand switchback LEDs...
The trick for LED headlights I think is disabling the DTRLs.
I had LED headlights on my 03 Tacoma with DTRLs and they had to be replaced all the time. Of course the technology was still new back then.

The "new" t-case coming from eBay looks to be in great shape. Worst case (hehe) I'll combine the two to make one good unit.

The seller may never ship the damn thing though, I might get antsy and have the broken case welded before it gets here. Its really not great timing to have the Tundra inoperable and clogging up the shop.

So since we’re talking about drl’s anybody know if I can swap in led’s and be fine? I currently have led’s in the headlights, switchbacks in the turn signals, and Baja squadron sae’s wired to the stock fog lamp controls. My drl’s are unhooked, but out of curiosity would it all play nice together?

    * little further digging looks like the little tear drop lights should still work even with drl’s unplugged. I bet mine are blown

ooof, I too have murdered some upholstery with heat. The tip of a heat gun instead of a soldering iron though.

I think your weight guess is spot on, Its light enough I didn't bother with the tranny jack, just kind of one arm pressed it up and out. It juuuust cleared the exhaust crossover.

My DRLs, the teardrops, killed themselves between headlight changes. At one point I had retrofitted Mini D2S 5.0 projectors and was running an HID setup and had white LEDs in them there teardrops and they lit up just fine. Eventually one of the Chinesium bulbs died out and the stupid guy at the inspection office denied my yearly inspection because when I retrofitted my lights, I had painted the silver reflector bowl black cuz I was wanting that black headlight look with my sick D2S projectors. Anyway, I went ahead and ordered new headlights and put some sweet bright Amber led bulbs into those DRL tear drops and they worked fine on my bench before I installed the buckets in the truck. Now though, they don't light up and I have looked all over the battery area of my 05 DC but I don't see that DRL disconnect anywhere so not sure why my teardrops no longer light up. With this retrofit I left the buckets their shiny Chrome and used BI-Led projectors this time. I did have to install resistors on both sides because they were acting squirrelly when I put them in the truck.

Long story short, not sure why my teardrop bulbs no longer light up. Meh.

What did you use for the bulbs? Always chinesium?

That bulb is at the end of a tube. The entire plastic tube sticking out of the back of the bulb rotates and pulls out.

I think the burnout issue is probably "cheap bulb" more than anything. I bought the lifetime-warranty "ZEVO" bulbs for mine (ZEVO 168A). Black package, not the white package. $19/pr, and I'm keeping the receipt.

@shifty` Yep. scAmazon LED bulbs. Bright ass amber LED bulbs. I am familiar with the long tube. I tested the bulbs on the bench before installing them into the headlight and they worked. Looked great behind the teardrop lens. I haven't taken the time to see if the plug in the truck is getting power but I know that before even when parked with the truck running those bulbs were lit which may not be as designed. Now though, when I'm driving toward the house to park in the carport, I can see the front of the truck in the window reflection and they don't light up. I'll mess with it this weekend maybe.

OK, dumb question, but LED lights only work when installed with proper polarity. Have you checked to make sure the + and the - are oriented properly in the sockets?

Only way to truly tell is to pull the tube and DMM on the leads with the lights on. The fact they're both out is suspect. But there's a shedload of heat in that little pocket, and cheap LEDs don't like heat, maybe they burned up. But that said ....

My teardrops are on all the time, doesn't matter which of the three positions the light stalk is in, or whether the fogs are on. I believe those are providing resistance on the lighting circuit, and maybe those being halogens why I didn't need a resistor when retrofitting with LED mini-projectors. It'll be interesting to see if I start seeing weird shit when I retrofit those to LED (I still have halogen turn signals). Also, I think the Sylvania ZEVO bulbs are non-polarity, you can't install backwards.

I also wonder if maybe the new LEDs you got have less resistance than the prior pair, and maybe they're not lighting up because of screwiness with the circuit (i.e. no resistor to provide minimum desired load)

Yes. I will check the sockets for power. The previous bulbs I had were cheap Chinesium with multiple LED elements on them so yea, probably heat killed it. One stayed working the entire time though. These new ones are different and have the element encased in clear plastic with less LED emitters so I'm sure these should be ok as far as heat goes. I am also toying with the idea of connecting the halos on the bi-led projectors I am using. I have LEDs in the turn signals and haven't had any issues with those.

    Old were similar to these.

Y'all were right. I'm an idjit. Lol.

Update. DRLs are fixed. Between bench testing the bulbs and installing the buckets back into the truck I managed to somehow remove the bulbs and install them backward into the long tube.

I tested for power at the truck harness and had over 13v while truck running. Removed the long tube from the headlight bucket and installed the bulb after turning it 180 degrees and they lit up. Doh!

They light up when I unlock the truck and stay on when I remote start it and when in drive. Noice.

Just a heads up for anyone needing cv axels. OEM are not available anywhere right now or in the foreseeable future.

When changing the oil over vacation we noticed that my son’s truck has a ripped boot on the passenger side. My son has the truck 500 miles away at school and is only home for as couple of days when he is home so rebooting was not really an option I wanted to deal with.

After reading all about how aftermarket ones are subpar, I bit the bullet and ordered a new pair of OEM from a Toyota dealer to the tune of over $800 on Monday. They showed in stock on the website.

I was contacted today by the dealer I ordered from and they don’t have any in stock and OEM Toyota CV Axels are on back order with no known or anticipated restock date.

I canceled that order and went ahead and ordered a set of Trakmotives off RockAuto. Once installed I will reboot the Toyota ones and have them ready when the Trakmotives give out.

One more part that is becoming difficult to find for these trucks.
