GAS LEAK - 2022 Tundra Finally Leaked Recall

Well, I guess the recall isn't "No big deal" as the dealership says...

Got home from the grocery store and my pregnant wife was complaining of a gas smell as she was unloading the truck in the dark. I walked over to the passenger side and she was literally standing in a puddle of fuel. Popped the flashlight underneath and it was a steady stream of gas pouring out from the gas tank skid plate. Slowly subsided as the truck cooled down but holy cow that’s not cool. The dealership told me not to worry about it in November. Unbolted the skid plate and it was all coming from the top right where the recall said the gas/break line would rub. 2022 SR5 TRD off-road with the 6.5 bed - 23k miles. Displeased.

Has anyone been through this? Fix? Will they tow it I’m an hour from the dealership.

I could barely shove my phone up there to take the picture. Looks like it must have been spraying at one point to the left of the photo where it's all wet. Most of the leak when I found it was off to the right following that gas line.

I will be calling Toyota directly tomorrow as well as the dealership.

 

My dealership was adamant I have mine repaired. Took half a day. I'm positive they will tow yours in and the paperwork shows they will put you into a rental vehicle until its fixed.

You sound like the first actual failure we've seen on the forum

 

The dealer will.have to step up and tow it. Glad your family is ok and that's the most important!

I don’t mean this to sound harsh, but I’m not sure what you expect Toyota to do for you beyond what they’ve already done. I get that you’re displeased, but they’ve already acknowledged this issue and warned all known owners.

They’ve issued a nationwide recall and the temporary fix was recently released. They’ll replace your fuel line with the current version and then apply the temporary shield to protect it (the interim fix). The fuel line replacement and the temporary fix will be covered by Toyota under the recall.

The permanent fix is going to be released by Summer of 2024 (per Toyotas letter to owners) and it will be, I suspect, a redesigned fuel line that is routed differently. I had the temporary fix done last week before I went on a 1200 mile roadtrip. Took about 2 hours because they have to drop the fuel tank and then it was done. I’ll go back once the permanent fix is released.

Side note: It takes a day or two for your dealer to get the parts kit needed for the temporary fix. Unless they have a kit on the shelf, they’ll have to order it. It will take longer for the kit to arrive than to perform the temporary fix and replace the fuel line.

As to your question about towing, that depends on a number of factors. If you’re still under the base warranty or have an extended/platinum warranty that includes towing (most do)…then Im sure some or all of the towing will be covered. If neither are the case, then I’m not sure how the recall plays into it to help cover some or all of the towing cost. If you’re outside of a warranty, your local dealer might also cover the cost of towing as a goodwill item.

In the end, I’m glad you caught it before anything major happened. That’s the important thing. Sucks this is your first post here, but welcome to forum nonetheless!

 

Yep, its a copy from Reddit, put it over here so people could know it's not a thing to brush off. This could have been really serious. I'm not expecting more answers just putting the word out since I couldn't find anyone else that had the line rupture. What I expected from Toyota was to address the issue while my truck was at the dealership twice before this happened, and after the recall came out...

 

I think he just expects his $60k+ truck by a brand deemed to be reliable to not create puddles of gasoline in his garage.... This could've been a disaster. This new trend of consumers playing HR and jumping to the corporation's rescue is just bizarre.

 

I get it. Read my post how you will, but it doesn’t change my response about expectations. If you read it as me defending a corporation, that’s on you.

They’ve issued a recall. A temp fix has been made available for free. To be surprised that the leak that they acknowledged could happen then warned everybody about with a letter and then it actually happened…I’m not sure what to tell you. Again, I ask what would you expect Toyota to do beyond what they’ve already done?

 

Exactly this. I think trusting the word of their dealerships telling people to carry on when my truck has been in the shop twice since the recall came out is something to be warning others about

 

Don't look like it's leaking from the Red circle. Wild guess looks like it's leaking from around fuel pump cover, access plate? O Ring or something?

 

I think it was spraying to the left. Most of the dripping when stopped was coming from the right running down that gas line. Weird angle for the photo

 

Thanks @BillyGoat8 for sharing this case here. First I’ve seen an actual rupture. So glad no one was injured. I believe many of us haven’t taken this issue too seriously because of the attitude of our dealers and in my trucks case I see plenty of space between those two lines. Maybe they can shift and rub! I’ll be more anxious to have mine remediated now.

 

Curious about your build date and mileage. Actually I’m probably more curious about what type of roads you drive your miles on. Seems to be a fair amount of dust there like you drive dirts roads? Bumpy roads are probably more likely to cause friction on the line.

 

I picked it up new July 2022 and has 23k miles. I live next to a few million acres of national forest in WA and spend some time on forest roads up in the mountains so it could be from bumpy roads for sure. This isn't even close to rock crawling or something, just regular old dirt logging roads where the dirt is like powdered sugar in the summer and gets everywhere. The location of the picture is crammed up there so never gets much action from the car wash. I did pay $5,000+ extra for the "Off Road" package though...

This happened on the way to the grocery store which is really odd. I haven't been off the pavement in a few months. It looks like there's an unused slot for a hose right next to the break line clip. I wonder if they just didn't have the right fuel lines to fit into that secure holer?

 

Yes. Many have noticed and commented on that larger vacant clip that’s not been used in any of our trucks photos.

So if you go in for service ask the advisor about the recall and they say it is all TBD, you march back into the shop and start barking orders? Some dealers hide behind Toyota quality to dodge trying or fixing anything. The one Lexus I had dealer was fond of saying" We are Lexus we don't have problems" The 3 nearest me are all that type. The dealer I bought from is a real dealer but 2 hour drive. Call 1-800 Toyo or 1-800 Lexus they send you to the dealer

 

Does anyone here know if an aftermarket cat shield like Talons needs to come off before the dealer can perform the temp or permanent fixes? Mine has some security screws and I am not sure I trust the dealer to mess with those. So, I might pull the shield myself if that is required.

 

Lol, I can picture it now... Someone on the assembly line realizes the hose and harness are different sizes, shrugs it off and carries on.

Imagine his face now hearing it's a nationwide issue.

Of course assuming his supervisor told him not to worry about it...

 

The cat shield is very far forward of the gas tank. They don't need to touch the cat shield or any front skid plates to drop the gas tank. I have the Talon's Cat Shield (with security bolts) and an RCI skid plate BTW. They didn't touch either when they did the interim fix on the recall for me.

Both times I was in there they brought it up like this:

"There's a recall on the truck where they think the gas line could leak. It's a total precautionary measure and no one has actually leaked"
"That sounds sketchy let's get that done while I'm here"
"Toyota doesn't have a fix for it so there's nothing we can do for you at the time being. We will call you to get it in when we get the replacement parts, but there's nothing to worry about now."

I worked in hospitality for a long time and realized there's not much benefit to start demanding things from people when they don't have the resources to fix it. Unless you were able to make the parts appear somehow?

 

Called my dealership and they said the interim fix is not available yet.

 

Sorry man...but they're lying to you. Well, probably less of a "lie" and more of a person who lacks the correct knowledge and isn't willing to educate themselves by asking someone else for the answer.

It's available. I had it done last week.

Now we're having fun! Still dripping gas on the way up the flatbed. Corporate seems to take it very seriously. On the way to the dealership, so we will see what the outcome there is. Looking at the diagram I found below it looks like it could be leaking from anywhere those corrugated tubes are which makes sense. I previously had thought the gas line was on top where they cross. Hard to tell by shoving my phone up there but it looks like it was pooling in a few spots up there (T3 &T4 on the diagram)

 

Two recalls for the same issue both dated August 9th 2023 plus the EPB programing recall. Corporate seems to think they should have been able to do the temp fix at either of my appointments (September and late October). The dealer on the other hand just told me they got the parts for the temp fix last week. Dealership doesn't seem to want to talk about it until they get the truck so Ill know more soon.

I went in to the Belleville,Ontario Toyota dealer yesterday to get the temporary fix done on my 22 Tundra. But there was too much gas (half full) in the tank for 2 guys to remove it. They also said they couldn't siphon it out when I asked that question. They said they had done one with a quarter of a tank of gas earlier in the day.

 

Had mine done last week and I had almost 3/4 of a tank.

 

So I randomly get a call from Toyota today, my service advisor saying you need to bring your truck in for a temporary fix and was adamant that I bring it within the next two days. I asked the same guy a month ago while the truck was in for service, and he brushed it off saying they had no temp or permanent fix yet and didn't seem too concerned.

I would suspect that the posts on Redditt and here have prompted corporate to have all the dealers to start calling all those affected.
