Dropped off my 2016 Tundra for routine service and had them do the 2 diffs and transfer case. Looked over the work order had saw they had the correct 75w Toyota oil on the work order. $76 a liter. Went to pick up the truck and noticed that the work order was now significantly cheaper and saw it said 6 quart of 75/90 and no 75w. I had them call the mechanic over who did the work and he confirmed that he put the 75/90 in the transfer case, same as the differentials, and that he "always uses that because they buy it in bulk". I had him pull the papers for my truck and it says right on it to use the 75w. I've read the horror stories on here of people using the 75/90 in these BorgWarner's with issues of 4wd not disengaging properly, "pulling", etc. The vehicle was NOT driven off the lot. They are going to drain the 75/90 out and put in the proper fluid as well as issue me a "letter" of some sort acknowledging their mistake.

Should I be concerned? Obviously I can't demand a new transfer case but what else should I do other than this letter to CYMA? I kept the service order paperwork that shows the 6 quarts of 75/90 went in when I tried to pick up the truck. The truck is mint with 90k on it and I plan to keep it a long time.

    Thanks in advance

First, Welcome from LA (Lower Alabama)! Since it was not driven off the lot and they are replacing the oil with the correct weight, I would not worry about it. You will have the letter from them in case anything does, but there was no opportunity for the wrong oil to do any damage. If you are really worried about it, have it changed again after driving it a few thousand miles. Driving it will thoroughly mix the remaining 75/90 with the 75 so draining it at that time will remove nearly all of the 75/90 oil. If this was a dealership, consider reporting their maintenance department AFTER you get the letter, if you are not satisfied that the technician was not properly educated.

IMO, I wouldn't worry about it. Get the 75W fluid installed and you are good to go..

Much appreciated. Love his videos. If I ever have to rebuild my engine or anything I'm shipping my car to him. I will have the dealer correct it to 75w like it should be and go from there. There is alot of mixed feedback on here and I'd rather just play it safe and stick with the book. I do it every 30k and don't mind paying the extra for 75w.

In addition to the new fluid and letter, have them compensate you for the extra time and inconvenience in the form of service credits (if you still trust them) or parts credit.

I wish they would do that. Huge pain in the butt because now I'm in a Tacoma rental since they had no 75w in stock, don't have my kids car seats, was supposed to pickup something on Facebook marketplace today and now couldn't.
