Torque converter shutter when passing.

2007 Toyota tundra 4x4 with 240,000 mi on the truck. There is a shutter from the torque converter when passing a vehicle on freeway speeds going 60 to 70 mph I guess going into 5th or 6th gear? I don't know for sure what gear The truck is going into, but there is definitely a shutter going into gear at higher speeds at a high RPM. Every other gear is fine.

Would changing out the transmission fluid be a possible solution for the shutter?

 

Possibly, has the fluid ever been serviced? I would certainly do a drain and fill (not flush!) if you have never done it.

 

To be honest, I don't believe it's ever been serviced.
I usually service the transmission every time I get a used vehicle. Anyways. It's most likely overdue IMHO.

 

This sounds stupid (because it is) but check your air filter and replace if dirty. Being down on airflow impacts 5th and 6th gear performance.

My 17 had a small shutter that was like the trans wanted to drop a gear going up hills but couldn't quite convince the computer to do so. Replaced my dirty air filter with a clean one and been fine since. YMMV.

 

Additionally check that bypass hose at the front of the intake manifold. Heat may get to it and split it causing issues with throttle response and transmission hesitation. The bypass hose goes from the center of the intake, once you open the hood dead center there will be a hose that U-turns below the throttle body. If it's cracked, replace it, I think it's like $20, but purchase a throttle body gasket as well since you will need to remove it in order to replace that hose, cuz it goes underneath it and U-turns back in. The new hoses have heat protection almost right up to the intake manifold. I may have posted a pic and part number somewhere. I don't remember where.

 

This is what I'm talking about, that hose by the red circle and was replaced with pics below. Most of my shutters stopped after I replaced this and a loss of throttle response trying to overtake an 18 wheeler and got nothing.

 

My 07 4.7 does this as well only at higher RPMs, will shift into final gear no problem at lower RPMs, will sometimes do it if I hang onto S4 in town at 2.5k though. Transmission services have been logged on scheduled, through cooler lines.
I also have a whine while stopped at lights or signs, which goes away when I throw it into N.
Am I also looking at a TC issue? I’ve been stressing about the whine / whistle, don’t really want to throw a few thousand at it right now

 

I have the same while or whistle, but while driving. Assuming I didn't replace my gasket the 2nd time I removed the throttle body to reset the intake hose since it slipped inward toward the throttle, because I placed the edge of the intake too far out.

 

My fluid was done 20k ago. Don’t hear while driving. Should I just ignore it or be concerned lol

 

LOL.. idk, at this point if it moves efficiently I'm nit worried about it.

 

The 2007 and 2008 5.7s had a service notice for the torque converters. The shuttering could be it locking or unlocking. If so it's the clutch inside is moving freely. When it doesn't move freely it slips, that's causing vibrations. Think of a pressure plate in a clutch not being able to move freely when the driver presses or releases the clutch pedal.

In 2009 they changed the design. People who complained got their torque converter replaced. If you didn't complain Toyota assumed it was good. You are well out of warranty so you're on your own. It only happens in 4th, 5th, and 6th gears because that's the only gears the computer will lock up the torque converter. It could happen when the engine needs a little more power and the computer unlocks the

 

Did they send out service campaign memos to the owners or was it just an if you know you know thing. They’re still replacing frames on first gens.
I might see if I can get lucky and get mine done LOL. I’m a relatively new owner of it

 

I think it was just something the dealers knew about. I think there was a mileage limit of like 100k miles. More than that and you had to pay for it.
