Yup. Not to mention there are EV haters out there because they hate the way they are being forced, and some will go out of their way to cause problems or damage them. Kinda like the tree huggers that will key big trucks and SUVs, well stupid exists in all flavors.

Whatever this forum told me to do
    Agreed

    this is an awful idea

it tells other drivers that you are NOT driving

the liability of that makes you a moving target for claim hunters.

Road rage is bad enough out here (almost daily shootings that stemmed from road rage). I can’t imagine CA / NV being any better in that category

honestly, having owned 3 Tesla’s (X, Y, 3), still driving my X with 140k miles in 5 years and our newer Y. 10-15 cross country road trips. Purchased two with a tax break and one without. I would argue that nobody will say no to a tax credit, but it’s not the reason most people are buying the car. After 5 years being pure electric, and buying a Tundra… I really love our truck. And often find ways to sneak driving it in, ie forgot to charge LOL. At the same time our daily drivers are the Tesla’s and it truly is the best daily driving car. Not only from a safety perspective to almost no maintenance, to gassing up at home and paying about 20 dollars a month for both cars… it’s pretty unbeatable. The tech inside is fantastic, sounds stupid that having good streaming matters but when you are waiting for your kid and streaming Netflix it’s awesome.

All that said, from a preparedness perspective too, it makes sense to have both in the stable if you can. If gas prices go weird or it gets hard to fill up, you can lean on electric, and vice versa if grid goes down.

I would look at all this as finding the pros and cons of each platform. People are buying Tesla’s because it is a compelling product, not simply due to incentives, although some may. Just my two cents having seen both sides.

If I wasn’t paying an extra $700/mo for a teenage driver to be insured, I would have a truck as well

True.. but I got to where I am by living very frugally for many years and paying down my debt. Even when I had the means, we lived well below our means for many years prioritizing saving and investing. I have been blessed but it came with a lot of financial discipline. And even now, while I may splurge for certain items, really try to stay disciplined.

I will say however, a lot of people are purchasing cars way beyond their financial means. I agree, if you are paycheck to paycheck, an EV, and heck, an even a new car should not be the priority, especially with current interest rates. Sadly, I see way too many people living YOLO lives, despite financial pressure making decisions that may negatively effect them long term in a financial sense. But as always, to each his own.

Sorry to stray off topic but had to address. Back to EVs. They have their merits. If you want to bring financial sense to the equation however, price out a base model 3, federal and state tax credits, maintenance savings, fuel savings, less depreciation over time. Factor in high mileage driving and it really starts to make sense. And especially if you live in an area with TOU electric vehicle charging and add this on top of all the merits EVs and especially Teslas provide.. you can see why both people who need to save money will flex and prioritize purchasing an EV, and those who have the money but don't mind saving some money will also flock to these cars. Some of these people care about the environment, most just want the car and the features... and want to go fast.

But I have to agree, overall the economy is challenging, especially for the younger gen starting off. I can see how it can be super frustrating trying to make it.

LOL. It's interesting, I def wish Tesla would add more battery and do their EPA testing at more normal highway speeds (ie 75 MPH). For sure there is a lower range when driving at speed, biggest factor. But then again, my Tundra is rated around 19, but real world get around 12-13. Of course, I do have my boxy overloading crap. but even prior to installing that driving at my 90-100mph Texas speeds I was getting 14 MPH. But then again, we can fill our Tundra tank in 5 min.

Regarding the earlier funds, paycheck to paycheck talk; the wife’s lease is up in March / April. With the rates still stupid high, we will probably just return her car and leave it be until shit keeps settling down. I’m not going to pay stupid interest rates. This will save a vehicle payment, registration, fuel, insurance, and maintenance costs for a bit. We can always use our daughters or her aunts car when needed / wanted. Once the market settles down, we will probably add a truck to our fleet

I guess I am too much of a pessimist, I don't know. After watching "There won't be inflation" and "inflation will be insignificant and transitory" fall by the wayside I am viewing "inflation will basically be over next year and we can probably cut again soon" as a signal not to expect attractive rates again for at least another couple years.
