Can someone help me figure out a other compatible models that have the same rearend for my 2001 Tundra, 3400 V6 engine, 2WD, without ABS? I need a replacement but I'm having trouble finding a rear end because of the year, etc. I have a couple mechanics that can rebuild it after the end of the year but need it sooner. Calling around to the junkyards there aren't any for mine so I'm wondering what may be a compatible match?

I searched first but couldn't find anything. Does anyone have any information? Thanks in advance!

I mean, at the very basic level, you need to stick another regular cab (RC) or access cab (AC) truck, because axle housing width on double cab or sequoia is different, and sequoia comes in disc rear.

You are 2WD, so you don't need to worry about matching gear ratios with the front. I'm not the guy on here who can rattle off gear ratios for each make/model from 2000-2003. But if you're in a pinch, as long as it's AC/RC rear end, you should be able to swap in without any significant issues.

Do you need just the 3rd member or the whole axle housing?

If whole housing any 00-06 rc or ac rear end will fit but you may need to swap pinion flanges as the 2wd and 4wd driveshafts have a different bolt pattern.

The gear ratios will likely be different (3.9 vs 4.10 iirc) but it'll drive.

Or if the gears are ok and housing is bad, just swap your 3rd member into the donor axle housing.

If just 3rd member, grab one from a sequoia as it'll be 4.10. May require pinion flange swap.

You didn’t mention if you have a manual or automatic transmission.

The housings on the Abs trucks have a hole at both outer axle flanges for the ABS sensors. You can either keep the ABS sensors installed (and maybe cut the wires off the ends of the sensor), or simply fill the holes in with RTV. I think you can also buy ABS blanking plates online as well?

At far as just a 3rd members, here’s a list of what came in what. If you do any sort of towing or have larger than stock tires, now would be the time to lower the ring and pinion gears. I’d install a 4.3 ratio 3rd member in an instant.

    2000-2003
    3.91 - V8, 4x4, auto trans
    3.92 - V8, 4x2, auto trans
    4.08 - V6, 4x2, auto trans or manual trans
    4.10 - V6, 4x4, manual trans
    4.30 - V6, 4x4, auto trans

2004, Regular Cab or Access Cab
    3.91 - V8, 4x4, auto trans
    3.92 - V8, 4x2, auto trans
    4.08 - V6, 4x2, auto trans or manual trans
    4.10 - V6, 4x4, manual trans
    4.30 - V6, 4x4, auto trans

    2004, Double Cab

It is making a loud roaring sound so I am guessing it’s just the gears. It’s an automatic but I’m not real familiar with all the parts so I will have to pass this information on to my mechanic. Thanks for the info.

Sounds like just a 3rd member. If it's roaring it's bearings or gears. Did he pull and check axle bearings first? They can also make noise when bad.

I'd hunt down a sequoia donor as it's also 4.10, much more plentiful in the yards. He just may need to swap pinion flanges (good time to install a new oem pinion seal if so).

Like Assassin said, a Sequoia 3rd member will be more plentiful. The ratio difference between 4.08 and 4.10 is less than negligible. If you happen to find a more uncommon 4.30 3rd member and install it, it will make your truck feel like it has an additional 40 horsepower. I’d jump on this opportunity to make it happen. You’ll have a big smile on your face when you’re on the first test drive .

Thanks for the suggestions. No, I haven’t had a wrench put on it yet; that’s probably my first mistake!

Is there a good “buy-sell” site or group where we can look through inventory? I’ve seen some but don’t know which may be good and trustworthy. Thanks in advance.
