We have owned various models of Toyota for many years now, currently a Rav4. Our second vehicle is always a truck. For 10 years, we were towing various RV's so we preferred a diesel truck. Toyota doesn't offer a diesel truck in the US, so we have owned a Ram Cummins truck.

We no longer go camping pulling an RV, and have parked our fifth wheel at a seasonal spot in the higher altitudes for a summer getaway (we live in the Southwest desert). Since we no longer need the towing prowess of a diesel, we plan to shop for and purchase a Toyota Tundra, likely a 2018 through 2022 model. I joined this forum to assist me in learning as much as I can about the various models and features of those Tundra model years, to help me in choosing a Tundra to purchase.

I wish we could get Hilux and Tundra diesel versions here.

Yes, would be nice. Back when I owned 4Runners, I became aware of a US company that was buying wrecked diesel 4Runners in Japan, importing them, and then converting gas 4Runners to custom diesels. As one would expect, their conversions were very pricey.

big difference in the 2018-2021 vs 2022. Personally I would steer clear of 2022s, too many issues. A 2018 to 2021 should be a solid truck, V8, reliable. Look for a truck with the larger gas tank you will thank be later. Other than that, choose one with the features/options you want. Level of trim and features on the 2nd gen truck is not a dealbreaker, lots of aftermarket support and you can add many of the factory options if the truck doesn't have the ones you want.

Thanks, much appreciated. I was initially drawn to the appealing gas mileage of the 2022, but in my research, I have already begun to discover what you mentioned -- various issues starting with the 2022.

Re the gas tank, I did become aware of the larger gas tank that was an option with various packages. When shopping used Tundras, is there a code in the VIN that would indicate whether the truck came factory with the larger gas tank?

the higher trims will have the bigger tank. SR5 upgrade package will get you the 38 gallon tank. I personally would not buy one without the bigger tank, especially if you tow.

This will be helpful on the packages and options for 2nd gen trucks https://carbuzz.com/cars/toyota/tundra/2016/specs-and-trims

Small tank does get pretty annoying on long trips.
