2007 crew cab unlimited. I have pencil eraser size rust spots over both rear wheels. Not too concerned as the truck in 16 years old and like the old used look :).

Any recommendation on slowing it down or process prior to paint matching over it?

    Thanks

I would sand it down and apply some touch up paint. Fluid film on the back and everywhere else.

I just picked up an 08 and I hate rust so was worried about this happening to me. Where I live we get winter and salt for the icy roads so this happens to many around here. I was happy to find the fender liner is just plastic, and what I’ve learned is that those rust spots come from behind with trapped dirt/moisture and rusts from the back of the fender out.

First thing I did last weekend with mine is pop a couple of holes in the fender liner with a small hole saw and take the car wash hose to spray out any dirt from behind, then I sprayed rust killer on the back side of the fender to stop any rust that may have started. Hopefully it will never start now.

If you just sand and paint that it will come through again from behind if you don’t deal with the rust from behind the fender.

Thanks for your responses! Planning on working on it this weekend and will let you know how it goes. I will definitely spray them down before treating them.
