Don’t get air lockers

 

I've heard you have to basically install them in a clean room or they'll leak eventually.

 

I think it’s a issue of when, not if they will leak, I’ve got a Elocker in the parts pile waiting

I think i'd get a front e-locker & a tru-trac for the rear. Cant powerslide rainy roads with an open diff & i dont think i've ever seen anyone e-lock on the fly.

 

Does the gravel driveway abandoned by the SHOs and the most recent site of Panhandlemonium (part 1) qualify?

Is anyone here that wheels locked in the front? I keep hearing that the front isn’t strong enough for a locker.

 

Love my elockers. I had air lockers in the past in my LandCruiser and had issue after issue with the freaking o-ring. I also had an issue with altitude (over 10K ft) in Colorado. When I needed my locker my air compressor found nothing to compress and I had to winch myself up. Sad moment LOL

 

there was so much dust you had to protect every open beer. Permanent safety squints.

 

I am and just up in Colorado a few months ago and wheeled the shit out of mine. Had the front locker on 3 times out of ~19 days

 

That's what I also have heard. I'm not sure of it's so much the 7.5 diff or the CV axles themselves. But I've heard in general, a locked front diff on IFS is going to break CV axles. Like @FrenchToasty mentioned above regarding air lockers, I've heard goes hand in hand with front lockers on IFS in general. It's not a question of "if" but "when" you break a CV

 

Easy stuff like snow? Or rocky / muddy terrain.

This was my understanding as well.

 

I have RCV axles up front and the first time I was in a huge rut on the passenger side all muddy and it would not start to climb but i hit to button to lock both and she went right up. The other times were in thick ass black mud. Besides, you have to lock them every so often any way... or least I keep telling myself that.

The front ends are different with a 1st gen and a 2.5 gen so there is that

 

I've read a lot on it and the general consensus is don't be a dumbass and they won't break anything. It's more of a "turn on front locker, climb hill, turn off front locker" all with judicial use of the throttle. If you act like it's a solid axle and spin and bounce and turn, yeah it'll break.

From what I've seen a lot of tacomas are running them and doing fine with a bit of restraint.

Having a clean room isn’t the issue, it problem is when the O ring gets damaged during the install...which can be common. Common enough that even in the instructions there’s a warning about it. I’ve had 4 different ARBs (two Ford 9”, D30, D35). I have to admit there’s been some teething problems in the past...
-air compressor exploded into bits.
-ring gear mounting flange sheared completely off the ARB housing in the ford 9”.
-O ring leak
-another O ring leak

Each time ARB covered it under warranty, but that was back in the mid through late 90’s. I don’t know how their warranty operates nowadays. If i even install a locker in my tundra, i think i’d still go with an ARB. They are very durable units.

 

Warranty is good but obviously who likes yanking shit out because of known issues. Obviously I did not know going into it with the LandCruiser so with the Tundra I did not want any part of that.
