Hello everyone. I’ve currently been heavily in the market for a new tundra. I’ve been looking for the past few months but with the brake plastic fuel tube rubbing against the brake line recall around it’s been hard.

I’ve found this 2022 Capstone with only 2k miles. I’ve contacted the dealer agreed on the price and they said they need 30 days to fix the recall because they can’t sell the vehicle before fixing it. Now 30 days later called in and still no the recall hadn’t been fixed. They said the only option is now they can remove 1k off the price off the original price and that they can sell me the vehicle with buyers acknowledgment of the issue plus no CPO. Asking for guidance should I purchase it and wait for the dealer to take it in for recall fix? I need a truck asap lol. I would’ve hopped into another truck but I think I’m getting the cheapest tundra in the country. 2022 - 2k mikes for 62k. Please give me your thoughts. - sorry for the long thread.

go with a new 2024 that fits your budget , there is no recall stop sale for those.

an early build 2022 is upping the risk for a crappy truck, as near as I can tell from the tons of threads here, about march or April 2023 the builds really started cleaning up as they got well into the production

    I wouldn't lean into a '22 although I do like capstones.
Check out the Toyota deals page on Facebook. Good prices and availability right now.

    Welcome to the forum.

I agree with the second post. If you writing about the position you are in then that signals to me that you have some doubts about this deal. If you didn't have any doubts you would have bought the truck already.

Don't do it. It's too new a truck to be willing to write off the CPO and associated warranty benefits, too many red flags. There's no truck shortage anymore. Keep looking for the right deal.

aside from everything else (being Voodoo Blue and a 1794, price, extras already on it), the CPO was a pretty big plus for me when i got my 2020 a few months ago

You showed a 30 restraint for them to fix it and that is great considering you need one ASAP.
Don't forget this is an investment which equals no bueno in pushing things that just don't fit, so with that said there were a shit ton of minor problems that just weren't really ironed out in the beginning.
Just because your getting a "killah deal" on a top trim doesn't really constitute that this unit was put together with some special love or sprinkled with unicorn dust, just to find out in a month or two you bought a lemon...

As BB posted he was right on point with actual mentioning of posts of un happy owners here.A early spring of this year has shown a much better track record and mine falls into that category I have been very fortunate that there hasn't been any of the little annoyances that seem to add up to a bunch.
    I'm very grateful for this.
Find out what your cap is and pull the trigger on a 24.

Welcome to the boards man and good hunting!

Another approach is get the price down as low as possible and then buy a 10y 125 mile Toyota Platinum warranty from The warranty thread in this forum. Search warranty or extended warranty and you’ll find it. It will be way cheaper than buying from your dealer.

ya for sure but that still gets a 2022 first year build truck , not the most desirable thing at the moment

I am the service manager for a Subaru dealer. We deal with this all of the time, dealer can’t CPO with an open recall and no remedy is yet available. Here’s a work around if the dealer can do it. Get them to throw in a 3rd party warranty that has the same terms and conditions as the factory warranty. That way you still get to buy the truck and you’ll still have coverage, just not though the manufacturer.

    ^this

mine is solid, it’s a late spring early summer 23 build , quiet inside , no misaligned panels etc, it’s solid and tight so far

many others around this build time report the same thing, it kinda makes sense as I think that’s a year and a half and into the second model year run of trucks

knock on wood I can’t think of a single issue besides the lame ass jbl putting too much bass in the doors but that has been every tundra I have ever owned lol.

I’d be leery of the 2022 model year AND the fact it’s a pre-owned with only 2k miles.

Also, if Toyota is anything like BMW, CPO doesn’t mean squat. My wife’s X5 blew its engine at 85k miles. It was a CPO, and BMW wouldn’t cover anything. They wanted $4500 just to diagnose the problem. It got ugly, and we ultimately got screwed.

I am of a different opinion than most of the above posts. I have a 2022 that I bought new and now have 36,000 miles. I have zero issues and zero complaints, and I am actually very particular about things like rattles and misaligned body parts and things mentioned.

If the dealer throws in an extended warranty that is as good or better than CPO, then it might be your only opportunity to get a Capstone with 2,000 miles for $62,000 ever.

Ask for a service record and Carfax just to confirm that there is not a reason why a 2022 only has 2,000 miles.

I purchased my 2012 Tundra CPO with 4004 miles. Glad I had the extended warranty and used it.

That is not true. You cannot certify a unit if it has an open recall, the system will not let you. Certified cars are truly held to a higher standard. We get audited once a month and someone comes in and pulls the keys for 5 CPO units and ensures they are up to the standard that Toyota wants.

technically it cant be CPO if there is an active recall on it. so the dealer is making concessions in order for you to buy it now instead of waiting. and getting it CPO does cost the dealer money (if i remember correctly they have to pay a fee to get it CPO by toyota in order to get the oem cpo warranty).

little fact is if a vehicle is cpo and you are on a very tight budget you can get them to drop the cpo to get a lower price that might fit your budget. but long term this is loss on the buyer. ive seen some cpo drop vehicle price between 1500-3000 dollars.

its really up to you if you think the risk vs reward is an acceptable level.

Yep, the cost is now $550 per unit to report a CPO vehicle to Toyota once it is sold. As for de-certifying cars to further discount them, that's a major strike in Toyota's eyes. Once you mark it as certified, they expect you to follow through with it. A few of those strikes will actually get your dealership banned from selling CPO in the future. They have really begun a major crackdown on the rules as of the last year.

If the recall is the issue, then there is no reason to run. Just buy it with the signed waiver and have the recall work done when they are ready to do it, like every other Tundra out there who will have to get it done.

I would be more concerned about why a 2022 only has 2000 miles on it. Was it in the shop for something major all this time not being able to be driven? That would be a concern to look into, but the recall is nothing to be concerned about.

Buy 2021. Only 1 year older, but difference in reliability is over the roof. If you get bored with it a few years forward you'll be able to sell it pretty much for the same money. It is really boring, nothing happens to it. Gas every 400 miles, oil every 5k.

This! You can get a Capstone or you can get the cheap seats new.

Test drive the hell out of it and look up the service history. If clean, why not?

EDITED TO ADD: I sold my 2014 "second gen" Tacoma to CarMax in 2016 with only 4000 miles on it. It still smelled new. My only reason for selling was because I wanted the 2017 3rd gen because I liked the sunroof/tech package. Not all low mile trades are nefarious. :)

Im not seeing your "over the roof difference" in reliability just yet.

you just don't like the new tuck, we get that, and thats fine, but you have no facts based on real ownership that would make that a true statement.

Im not saying I don't agree that the prior platform was good, it was, but this is needs a chance to prove itself and some time before a statement like that is valid that the old one is over the roof better. I have owned 5 tundras, they have all had quirks and some had problems and the 2016 totally crapped out, still a good rig, as were the others.

How having just one vehicle would change anything in global picture? I may or may not have problems with it, so what? Can be one lucky guy, out of a thousands and thousands. Can be a loser, too. Numbers is what matters. And numbers say 2021 will be likely much more reliable than 2022. Especially because its reliability history is so well known and can be predicted with high degree of confidence. 2022 in 2023 is still a knew thing, it's long term reliability is unknown yet, but it does have major problems already surfaced. What are you objecting?

I would buy a 2021 without warranty at all and don't give a sh*t about any extended warranty, because most certainly it wouldn't give me any problems for many years. At least critical ones. As numbers say.
