Where to tap?

Hey guys, looking to setup a LED strip with my side steps. I want to have the lights turn on when the courtesy lights turn on, so my wife can see where she's stepping in the dark. I'm sure someone has either tapped into the wire loom or connected via the fuse box. Looking for some advice on where the best spot is. Thanks!

@RowdyRon @kemosabee is it possible to tap into just a fuse? One that will turn on the lights with unlocking the car such as the puddle lights do?

 

@RowdyRon i really want to do this, but afraid of splicing the wrong wire, did you use a wire diagram or anything?

 

The little entry light is a good place to tap into as that comes on when you unlock/open the doors and remains on until it's timeout is reached which can be changed via settings. I have the interior foot well lights and the puddle lights on the bottom of the plastic door panels for all the doors. I have had it there since I bought my truck in Nov '14

Well, when I looked into this before I noticed a couple of notches/holes under the scuff plate leading under the truck. Route through there.

@RowdyRon I forgot to ask, where did you get your led strips for the courtesy lights and now I'm kinda curious about the bed lights too.

Where did you get both products?

 

@bsavoir I just noticed your comment, and a great one at that, are you talking about the one, drivers side, footwell near the hood release?

I like that thought too, so it stays on longer...

Yes that's the one, it also fades out differently that the other interior lights. It is also separate from the other interior lights.

 

@bsavoir I am in the truck right now, when ever I tap into the footwear light me led'so stay on constantly, even after truck start all doors closed and the footwear turns off. Any ideas?

 

@RowdyRon it was, I finally got it. I had to tap into two wires using my set up, in the footwear light.

What two wires did you tap into what two wires?

 

@Sixpack So I tapped into the footwell light under the dash just next to the hood release. Its the light that comes on when you open an door or unlock the truck. To tap, on my 2014 Tundra, there are two wires going directly into that footwell light, Blue and Tan, your blue is hot and tan is negative. So I sliced red to blue and black to tan. This gave the full effect. Always test positive (hot) first.

At first I connected blue to red and grounded black, this gave a result of just having the lights on all time despite what the footwell light did.

Blue (Positive) to Red (Postive) AND Tan (Negative) to Black (Negative)

Be sure to make some strong connections maybe even using the options above, and secure them down, not something you want to fool with twice.

So where do you route the wires from the passenger side? Also thinking of foot well lights any good write ups on where to wire them? Sorry I'm new to modification
