Locking lug nuts

Anyone know what locking lug nuts work on the 22-24 Tundras? I don’t want to pay $100 for the Toyota ones.

 

Yeah I wouldn't get the Toyota ones anyway. My truck came with them and two of them stripped the head out when the dealer did the second tire rotation. They had a hell of a time getting them off and damage two of my wheels that they ended up having to repair and repaint. Did they strip out because they were over torqued? Seems likely.

 

Take off your locks off before taking truck in for repairs or maintenance.

 

I paid $85 for the set of Toyota wheel locks. The lug nuts have a unique shape as they are tapered and have a much wider diameter on the side facing the wheel with a washer integrated into the lug nut. I initially just went to an auto parts store and they had sets for $25 but none with the unique shape that Toyota is currently using. They had some that had the correct size thread but I didn't want to use them since they would have put a lot more stress on the wheel as they lacked the large tapered side.

I’m having no issues with the Toyo ones. Might try ordering online from your parts dept. (DONT walk in and ask-price is double) Might be cheaper than the price we paid for them with the truck.

 

Okay so it sounds like the Toyota ones should be used over aftermarket like gorilla?

 

I ordered the black ones on the black friday toyota 25% off sale for like $50.

 

I've also thought that taking off the skid plate prior to any type of dealer/grease-monkey-shop service would be doing it the smart way.

Are these like the ones I had on my Tacoma? A cover over them that will swell up over time? Had truck in for service and the dude brought out one of my lug nuts to tell me they couldn't rotate the tires because the lug nuts were all swelled up and couldn't fit a socket on them. If I wanted to pay 300+ for a new set of Toyota lug nuts they were going to be able to miraculously get them all off. Told him to take a hike and the price of the lug nuts came down to 250 or so. I ordered some black solid ones

I have my Toyota Tundra at the dealership today for tire rotation and balance. They broke two of their lug lock keys trying to remove locking lug nuts. They are going to have a level 3 specialist remove them - sounds like using a tap and die set as there will be some drilling done. They are going to cover the lug replacements. It concerns me having the locks on as what happens if I get a flat on the road? Is this a common issue with the locking lugs? They blamed it on lugs getting hot over time and the lugs stick. Why is it not a problem with all the other lugs?

 

I live in a city where crime is rampant and I have NOT put those dumb wheel locks on in many years. Have you guys heard of rampant rim/wheel stealing? I just try and keep things simple and those silly wheel locks are nothing but trouble. Again I live where garages and cars get broken into a lot when the weather is warm, seems they're not as active in the cold. Slimy thieves don't like foraging in the cold I guess.

I did put a small padlock on my spare 'chain' so it couldn't be lowered. I have heard of people losing their spares in this crime-infested city.

Cats are a different story, glad I have a talon covering them. It was stolen off my other car.

 

Exactly this. I would only put some on if I had some Volk wheels. When was the last time anyone seen a Tundra sitting on cinder blocks. Lol

 

Not heard of wheels being stolen. Just Cats, tailgates (Tacomas), drilled gas tanks, and spares. I've never had any issue with locking lugs on any of my cars or trucks. Just never use an impact gun on them and they are fine. I always ask my tire store (Costco & Discount Tire) not to use the gun on them and they are fine with that. I use a Club on the wheel at night too hoping they'll just pass on ......
