Started Engine After Oil Change

Good evening! I have a novice question and truth be told I know it’s my paranoia kicking in. I’ve changed the oil myself in all my vehicles over the years. Watched a video on clear flood mode and looked up to see if my 2018 Tundra had it. Thought it would be good to do to “prime the filter” before start. Found a forum post on facebook stating it did with instructions. Shouldn’t have trusted it given it was from a forum and not the owners manual. Changed the oil and tried it. Engine fired off with my pedal pressed to the floor. I killed it immediately and doubt the RPMs got over 2K if that with the pedal pressed down. Bet it was less than a second. I’d been running the engine just prior to changing to pull it into the shop so I’m sure the engine had oil coating it. That couldn’t have caused any harm could it?

 

Definitely over thinking. It’s fine.

If you want it to crank and not fire pulling the IGN fuse will do it. Not necessary.

 

You can prefill the filter with oil before screwing it back on to minimize the delay of filling it if you’re concerned about that in the future.

 

Just a FYI. I've had 7 new from the dealer Toyotas since 1985. Lots of miles on all of them. Done every single engine oil change myself (some 200 of them). I've never prefilled an oil filter. Never had an inkling of an issue.

Ha, I tried the same thing and was surprised as you were when the truck fired right up .
Don’t worry about it, just gets the oil pressure going a bit quicker!

 

For sure gents. I was more concerned about the fact that it started to rev up with the gas pressed before giving it a chance to get oil up into the engine. As I stated it didn’t rev higher than 2K and was only for a second.

Thank you gents for all the responses. It’s much appreciated. I’ve done my own oil changes for 15 years on multiple trucks and this was the first time I felt like I made an oops.

 

I don’t think it’s necessary either. I do it because it’s easy…figure why not.

 

I've done my own oil changes for over 30 years and have never prefilled a filter.

 

You'd be surprised how long your bearings go without oil if you don't pre-fill the filter first which only takes a minute. Will it kill your engine, no, is it great for it, also no.

You don't oil up your gen2 bearings and someone's else gen3 spins them.

 

You didn't hurt anything and now you know (if you didn't before) that the internet has some bits of good advice, and really dumb advice.

 

Don't look at me. I'm still flabbergasted that people insist on draining out perfectly good TGMO from the factory and refilling with what I am sure is an inferior product.




Except Kirksoil. Kirksoil is the only lubricant that is equivalent to TGMO in laboratory testing.

Kirksoil is guaranteed to protect bearings during periodic dry running conditions. Except for 3rd gen bearings. Even Jebus can't save those.

Prefilling oil filter is irrelevant due to the highlighted fact. It is already way too bad, can't make much worse.

Ok, so there is a difference. If prefilling the filter makes such a difference, why doesn't the manual recommend doing so? And most techs I know don't prefill the filter. And I'd bet that the million mile Tundras did not have prefilled filters in their oil changes. Is prefilling a BAD idea? No. But how much good is it REALLY doing?

 

Just keep topping it off until the main bearings fail, which is imminent with gen 3, don't ya know?

 

Also a superior lubricant.

I've heard rumors Toyota uses Boibutter at gen3 assembly lines. So it is silk smooth and rock solid.

 

Do they sell it in 55 gal drums? I've heard this is how much is needed with gen3.
