I'm new here; hope I'm not being redundant:

I'm thinking of buying at a 2017 Tundra, 5.7l, 4wd, double cab. I'm seeing complaints about the factory controllers on newer models. Is the problem only with 2018 models, or are any older models having problems. I live 6 hours from the nearest Toyota dealer and I sure as heck don't want to have trouble right away with the brake controller.

My 2016 had bad issues, could not get enough brake power, Toyota came out with a TSB in 2017 that greatly improved it braking performance. You need to check with a toyota dealer so see if was done to your truck.

I've been researching this and it seems the general consensus is that Factory brake controllers are problematic for all makes and models of vehicles. Not exclusive to Toyota. Good news is it should be a relatively easy and fairly cheap fix to replace them with a Tekonsha P3 or other aftermarket controller. The p3 runs about $150 or so....

I have a 2016 and tow a 25 ft trailer, dry weight is 5952. I seem to plenty of breaking with my factory controller. In fact I have it at the lowest setting. It has several option based on the truck trailer break systems.

Thanks for this. Most unhappy people comment, while the satisfied ones usually do not, hence a skewed response to queries.

I have been researching and watched a video on the switch to the Tekonsha P3 and I will probably get one since it is so simple to change, especially with the ready made cable and bracket available. However, since my first tow will be with an empty 2000 lb trailer, I'll probably tow it with the factory controller just for a test.

Racingjohndeere55: OK, I get it now. Yeah, through the mountain pass and all; speeding a little I can make it in 5 1/2 hours, if the road is dry.

Just to be clear it seems that Model year matters. The 2018 and 2019 seems to be the problem year.

Racingjohndeere55: NEPA = Northeast Pennsylvania? I guess it's not the National Environmental Policy Act. I once lived in Horseheads, NY. Close, no?

TacoWuzzaTurd: Good to know, but with the replacement bracket and panel availability for the 2017, I suspect they have some trouble too. Unless the 2017, 18, and 19 are all the same fit. In any case, I'll probably get the Prodigy eventually; it seems like a more responsive unit.

Racingjohndeere55: I live on the Southern Kenai Peninsula, 1/2 hour East of Homer, AK. Only one road to Anchorage where the Toyota dealer is located.

I understand this was a software update. How would the update be done?
