Meh, 5100s will do you fine. And cost-effective.

Not a bad idea, I'm loving my 6112's that i threw on a couple months ago. Especially if you get some good deals this week!

FYI, the Quick struts have a much larger diameter shock shaft than the OEM’s.

Thats true, i had 5100 front and rear for about 5 years before i upgraded to the 6112's and they worked great for me as well.

I agree. The modern engine aesthetic with the big plastic covers doesn't do much for me. I'm old and I liked the simpler times when everything was there for you to see. There are exceptions of course. ;)

How do the 5100 and 6112 compare? I've read the 6112 is little softer/smoother ride which is why I gravitated towards them. I'm mostly looking to level, and for something decent on the street and dirt roads/fire roads. I don't really have much "real" off-roading around me.

Rapid driving on fire roads? Generally smooth, washboard, rough as hell?
I only ask because what I’d want for chunky/holy dirt roads is not the same as I’d want for predominantly smooth or washboard. Lots of washboard clay roads in the SE USA, at least south of I-16.

I don’t always rev it to 6k, except when I do donuts. It’s so smooth at 6k it’s astonishing.

Just a quick donut and burn out to break in the new plugs and coils.

I need to take advantage of the C1201 code while I can :bananadead:

I like my 4.7 on my 2000. The 5.7 on my 2018 has a stupid plastic shield. When I lifted it off, there was a ton of foam encrusted with mud dauber nests weighing probably 5 pounds.

That’s perfect weight addition for added traction up front while in 4WD bro.

I would agree with what you read, however the 5100's reuse the stock spring, so those were my original ones. The 6112 gave me a whole new spring which was the 600ft/lb i believe.

If youre just looking to level and do some dirt/fire roads the 5100s would probably be just fine.

Also @shifty` brings up a good point on types of dirt roads. Washboard vs smooth. 5100s and 6112 are digressive shocks, so on washboard a Progressive shock would probably do better. I just slow down on the washboards or air down if its bad enough. Or I try to get up to a speed the smooths out the washboards.

I cannot speak from first hand knowledge, and I'm sure the 6112s are just that much more effective in the harsher environment they are designed for. That being said, the 5100s are very good on washboard, gravel, Forest Service roads, and pulling a 20' camper trailer on the highway, which is all I require.

Yea the 5100s did great for me on that type of terrain for years, but the shear beefiness of the 6112 is pretty impressive for the price that they are. Definitely a large diameter shock that can move a lot of oil. Some of the others with that same size are 2-3 times the price.

I love my 6112’s I thought with them being digressive they would be harsh on the slower stuff but they’ve been really smooth. I had 5100’s along time ago on a Tacoma and I remember them being really harsh

I loaded mine up with a load of dirt today. Definitely don't like the way the leaf springs are bending right now...

i was riding on bumpstops after 2 days (1200 miles) of a full camping load. But my soft shocks makes the truck avalon nice (with just the cap), so its a little fancier than a camry with a bed. Floats over rough roads with grace.

I'm a bit bummed by the Avalon being discontinued. I settled for a Camry as my main family car. Wanted an Avalon though. During Covid lock down I didn't own a car, then after a year was told to go back to the office and had to buy a car on short notice. A Camry was what I could get for a decent price.

I agree. The last model that released was really, really good looking. Especially the TRD version. But it was booted to the curb to make way for the Crown's revival.

I had 5100’s on the 1st notch with the stock TRD springs for a while. I’m no racer off-road but for what I did, on or off road was a good ride.

Hey guys, im starting the install of my Archive Garage medium duty leaf packs. Ive got one leaf spring out and was thinking of buying new bolts now that I think about it. The 3 main bolts per leafspring, (1 on each end of the leaf spring in the "eyelets" and the 3rd one in the shackle). Im having trouble finding them online to order. I know some of you guys are wizards at finding parts so figured Id see if any of you could help me with a part number or link for these. Thanks!

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I was thinking id end up doing the same if i cant get the new bolts soon. But one of the bolts looked a little corroded. I might just try to clean it up and reuse it though. The others so far looked pretty good. Still gotta remove the passenger leafspring pack after I button up the driver side. Hopefully those bolts are in good shape too.

@FrenchToasty I got a question for ya since it sounds like you did this upgrade. Or really anyone else that has done leafsprings or and AAL.

Ive only just removed the Driver side leaf spring and then called it quits for the day. But seeing as the new leaf pack is a little bigger and more arch, im thinking its kinda tight and ill need more room.

So my question is, if i need more room out of the axle on the driver side, should i unbolt the rear driver side lower shock bolt to get extra down travel to fit the new leaf pack. Ive done an AAL before but cant remember if i removed the bottom bolts on the shocks to get extra working room. Thanks!

Edit: I think last time, i just lowered the floor jack thats under the rear diff and that allowed the unconnected side to droop and give me room. Im pretty sure this is a dumb question, but its bugging me that i cant remember what i did last time, haha
