Is the break in procedure still a thing? On my recently purchased new 2021 Tundra I have about 360 miles now. Is this the correct procedure?

To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recommended:

    - For the first 200 miles (300 km): Avoid sudden stops.
    - For the first 500 miles (800 km): Do not tow a trailer.
    - For the first 1000 miles (1600 km):
    • Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
    • Avoid sudden acceleration.
    • Do not drive continuously in low gears.
    • Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.

Look in your owner manual. It gives you the recommended break in procedure.

I did break-ins on my '08 SR5 and my '21 Pro; I still believe in them (they wouldn't be listed in the owner's manual if they didn't matter)... also, given the fact that the '08 is at 275k and still going, I'd say it certainly didn't hurt

If it were my truck, I would follow a break-in even though you've got some miles on there already.... You have no way of knowing what was done to or with the truck in those first 300 or so miles, but it does you no good to worry about that; simple do your best moving forward.

Also, the truck only has 350 miles; but, I'd assume the oil has been in there since new (2 years) unless you can find documentation stating otherwise and that ToyotaCare maintenance was done (which would have them changing oil every 6 months in your case).

So, I would look to changing oil and filter soon and then again at 5k to get yourself a good baseline; then most folks change oil @ 5,000 to 7,500 intervals (some do every 10k)...

Look to 'drain and fill' Transmission fluid (Do NOT flush) around 50k (60k is normal, but it's been sitting a bit).... ***use Toyota ATF WS only***
Coolant 50k or 5 years... *** use Toyota 50/50 OE Pink Super Long Life ***
    Differential and T-Case @ 30k
Brake Fluid @ 3-5 years of service life
PS fluid about every 50-70K *** use quality PS fluid NOT transmission fluid ***

I am about to put like 1400+ miles on it during Thanksgiving, driving to Big Bend National Park and around that area for Thanksgiving and wanted to make sure I take it slow. I don't plan to tow anything yet.

If you're not towing I would drive it like any other car/truck. When you get back, it would be a good time to do your first oil change.

This truck sat in a dealership for over 2 years flat, and when I picked it up they replaced the battery as well as oil change. Should I still do the oil after this trip or wait for the 5K?

If it were mine I would change it out again after your trip, but that's just me.

Only out of pure curiosity, can you post the Carfax on this truck? Under carriage pix?

I wouldn't necessarily drive it slow... just don't keep a constant RPM until the 'break-in' is complete. I would guess if it clocked 100 miles at a dealership there were some test drives/demos w/it. So, the accelerator has probably been 'romped' on a little bit here and there; which isn't necessarily contrary to a good break-in.

Just my personal experience and what I did on my '21 Pro was the following....

1st oil change immediately after break-procedure (about 1k miles)

2nd oil change at 3k miles (about 6 months of ownership)

oil changes every 5k or 6 months after that (whichever comes first); and so far it's every 6 months as I'm still running my '08 as my daily driver

Yeah unfortunately I had no control over that and hope that some of these 100 miles were gentle :)

The good things are: you found an awesome truck; w/super low miles; it's a Toyota so there's always 'room for error' in how it was handled those first few miles; regardless of your 'break-in' procedure and its previous service, it's going to be the most reliable 1/2 ton you could have bought...

Every new vehicle I’ve ever bought has come out of the dealership sideways and then just driven however I need to drive. Never followed a break in procedure and never had an issue. Work them and get things seated. I will say that I don’t tow for the first 500 or so miles. After that, game on.

O yeah for sure. Is a boyscouts camping trip, so we will spend few days in Big Bend and few days in the Fort Davis Observatory and BTSR (Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch). Love me some good camping :)
