I don't know about the newest ones but I remember some guys on the GM Trucks forum complaining about their previous gen 6.2s knocking even on 91 or 93...

The 6.2L has a higher compression ratio than the 5.3L, so it does actually like to have higher octane. Its not just a computer tuning thing.

Additionally, since the new trucks have the superduper cylinder shut off where it can run on anything from 1 to 8 cylinders, my guess is that the engine spends a lot of time at high load.

So i could definitely see where it might improve mpg. Whether it offsets the price of gas, idk, but i bet the truck just runs and drives better all around, so it may be worth it.

My BIL's 6.2L has only ever had 87-89 octane fuel, whatever was cheapest. It doesn't knock, gets 19mpg or so average with mostly highway commuting. He does however have a misfire code for cylinder 5 which did not go away after new plugs and a coil. Likely collapsed lifter on that cylinder. Yay.

Looked hard at the 6.2 before going to my Powerboost. Very hard. At the time the 6.2 was only offered in the upper trims and the old tarted up work truck interior with shiny silver paint was still in there.

So I was pricing and looking for Chebbies, then took interest in the powerboost which is a stronger powertrain with the flexibility to still average over 20 mpg for nearly the same price. All packaged with more features. And Ford says you can safely run 87 but higher is Recommended which I take to mean it is detuned as needed. I have run 87 through to premium with no detectable difference.

But that growl tho. When I see the 6.2 badge I almost want to ask to hear it start up and rev like a little kid. Doesn't matter that I can outrun it.

You gotta be at wot to see a difference with the Powerboost, otherwise the pcm is just going to make the torque your right foot is requesting via the gas pedal. It will determine if the torque is being made with added timing and back off on the boost a little, or vice versa.

Years ago I had a 2006 silverado vortec max . . . . It was one of my favorites. Only got rid of it because gas was outrageous at the time and 13 mpg and premium fuel were killing me. . Towed great, had tons of power and was alot more simple than today's trucks.

1 - 8 cylinders ? Goes down to one cylinder ? Holy Moly. I will pass your comments to him - thanks.

Do those mpg's include driving in winter temps?

The Denali truck I heard sounds good at start up but then goes pretty tame within a few minutes at idle. Even quiet. I guess tuning for the luxury trim. I haven't ridden in it yet. I'm sure it sounds good when on it. He couldn't show me parked in a forest. 8^0

Yes, that is my understanding of the new DFM(dynamic fuel management) vs the old AFM which only functioned as 4 or 8 cylinder.

Not sure we get any extreme winter blend gas down this way as we don't get extreme winter either. He's 19mpg all the time.

how anyone can sit in those awful GM seats is a wonder to me, my word

I turned around during my test drive they were so bad, it felt like I was sitting on two metal bars

I didn't find the seats in my '17 2500 Denali to be uncomfortable.

I'd say the seats in my current '22 F-350 are better.

The seats in my '08 Tundra were the worst for me, I prefer the seats in my clapped out '03 Tacoma over those Tundra seats.

The best I've ever sat in were the seats in my '21 Titan XD.

So our company has about 15 GMC 1500 Denali's from 2012 to 2023 years that out Project Manager, Superintendent's, etc.... drive. These trucks see high miles since they are driving around so much. Mileage anywhere from 20k to 480k on them..... Total of 12 6.2, 3 5.3 trucks we bought during Covid years as it was all that was available......

You guys are going to hate me for saying this, but we have over 2.4 million miles in these trucks collectively as a whole. Not one engine has a rebuild, short block, even a head replaced. Not one time have they ever had anything other than the cheapest 87e10 put in them for every single mile. They are hands down the most reliable platform, taking the Toyota 5.7 out of the equation and we own 2 of those and 2 Tacoma's for survey crew also.

The 6.2 if you keep your foot out of it rivals any of these modern small displacement turbo vehicles. Most of our guys are in the 15-18 range in them. Keep in mind they are a good bit of highway miles in most of these but that is verified with the submitted odometer entry they make when fueling up at our gas filling pad.

We also have another business we own and they run nothing but F-150 up to F-450. Have about 6 F-150. 3 5.0 and 3 3.5 eco boost. Probably just is, but we have had to complete rebuild 3 out of those 6 trucks engines. 2 5.0 and 1 3.5......

Since the 5.7 is no longer an option, if someone put a gun to my head and made me buy a 1/2 ton today it would not be even close. A 6.2 would be in my driveway hands down not even close. Just my opinion on our experience at work and from some of the others we hang out with and use these trucks in similar fashion would 100% agree with my assessment.

My brother just got a 23 Sierra AT4 and I have to say they are a pretty sweet ride. But he only has like 1k on it but he raves about it, and it drove really well when I took it out.

Love the AT4 line, our 2021 GMC Yukon AT4 is by far the best SUV we have ever owned by a country mile!

gmc sierra with the 6.2 or the mini Duramax… I’m so tempted by the Yukon xl with the mini duramax, if only I could lease one for under $1k a month

Great thread and info. I got my current 23' SR5 Offroad DC coming from a GX460, solely fun, camping, overland, offroading. Current build is still stock but not sure how far I will take it after a few years. This truck is nice and growing on me; running a bed rack, softtopper and Alucab RTT. The plan was in time go to a slide in camper or bed try and platform camper. Coming from an SUV I like the inside space for extra gear since the bed isn't fully secure and air tight per say.

From the off-roading/wheelbase perspective, less is more, although single cabs are hard to find period and the 6.5 bed DC difference is probably pretty minimal. I love the square-boxish look of the new GMC trucks, and the Fords aren't bad looking either. I would want to go up to the 2500/F250 range for payload and seats/interiors are important, along with needing the factory rear locker. Maybe I could get lucky and find a CPO truck with the bed tray already and be more camper ready and not have to absorb that brand new cost as well. Alumatray, Norweld tray with a FWC or OVRLAND pop-top variation.

RAM 2500/3500 are nice too in the Power Wagon trim, but MPG is out the window. Prospector AEV type builds or start fresh and get it new with no bed and build it up from there. I'm sure there's options to avoid a bed sitting as a yard ornament or turning it into a Tundra hot tub LOL. How much can you get back selling a factory bed in that situation?

You and I will die on that hill.

GM seats from like 2015-2023 are just awful.

The only exception is if it’s like the redesigned ones in the Denali ultimate or AT4X in 2023

With back pain and degenerative discs and L4-L5/S1 stuff, seat comfort is paramount, especially on long trips and cross-country runs logging miles in a day. The Tundra seat right now work pretty good, but hurts 4-5hrs in. I ran a ROHO air cushion in my GX460 since that has like zero cushion "squish" to it which I need and is ideal. The only alternative is getting a Scheel-Mann seat, which you need to have brackets for and fool the airbag sensor, or go as far back and build a rig on a platform when the damn seats didn't have them; which is what; early-mid 2000s, then finding a rig that's not beat to hell or rusted that would serve the purpose.

According to that chart I'm 6'3" tall! (Instead of 5'5"). :(

I haven't been under 130lbs since probably freshman year of high school.

Im 6’3 190. Has nothing to do with fitness. GM seats are hard as a rock. They are stiff. You could also feel the safety sensors on the side.

All the GM forums echo the same. I loved my Raptor recaros, the Tesla seats are great too.

Ya it's a little off these days I'd say. I'm 5'7" and I have not been under 160 since my wrestling days, and I have not gained any fat since then.

    Well maybe 5 pounds.

Yeah some of the seats are just plain cheap now, thrown together and made to "look cool" but are trash. Volvo seats are great, if they made a true offroad lo-ranged SUV I'd be in line ASAP. Sadly the C303/304 seats aren't the same as the XC60/90s lol. Great that Ford actually put Recaros in the Raptors, Are the Tremor seats leveled up too from the normal lines of F-Series?
