10k vs 5k mile oil change

Best when used when taken right after the engine shuts off. The metal flakes also give your pancakes a lovely texture as you chew.

 

Completely agree with your comment about oil filters

Meh, might as well use 0w-20.

 

The entire 10 minutes of run time the motor lasts after the oil change.

 

With every vehicle I've owned since 1961 I have done the exact same thing (except for my first motorcycle which was too primitive to have any sort of manual):

Do what it says. It has worked perfectly for me for over 60 years and I have flogged several motorcycles mercilessly over the years with nary a failure.

I don't know how it can get any more simple than that.

But... the manual sez to use oil that's as thin as water and to leave it in there for 10,000 miles under normal usage! Filter too!

 

To be fair, what’s in the manual today is heavily influenced by outside factors now. Oil type is influenced by regulatory requirements. Oil change intervals are influenced by other manufacturers intervals, gotta keep up with the joneses.

 

So what! Point me to one single engine (or part) failure due specifically to following the manual to the letter.

I have found none that are not just some subjective unsubstantiated opinions. If the 0W-20 was no good for our engines, we would certainly know about it by now.

At what measurable risk? The engineers very successfully rise to these challenges (Toyota being a shining example) and have proven very successful at it. Outside factors have always been there over the decades and there is not a history of Toyota screwing things up as a result.

We are good to RTFM and doing what it says.

As MOST of my driving the last few years has been long distance Highway and 1200 mile round trips from KY to VA, I've been stretching intervals out to 7500

 

Oil threads are fun because everyone already made up their mind before reading it.

I am the second owner of my 2UZ-FE. The original owner followed a 7,500 mile OCI at the dealer for 240k miles until selling the vehicle. The service records show that during those 240k miles it got 5w-30 oil and a Toyota filter at each oil change. I bought it at 244k miles and have followed a 10k mile OCI with Mobil 1 5w30 and an oversized Mobil 1 filter. The most this 2UZ has been opened up was for valve cover gaskets and a starter.

After the video in the original post dropped last year I decided to do a Blackstone report at 380,000 miles. I see no reason to drop down to a 7.5k or 5k OIC. Even at 380k miles, no fuel is getting into the oil and I am only loosing about 1/4 quart (or 1 cup) of oil between changes.


This oil change sample included a 4k mile trip through dusty Utah trails that also involved water coming over the hood in Moab

 

I would hope at nearly 400k miles at least 2 timing belts and water pumps have been replaced

 

I performed the 3rd tb/wp at 315k and will do the 4th after 400k. Since the cam and crank seals are still original, I don't count any of the tb/wp jobs as "opening up" the motor. I guess by the same token the starter jobs weren't really opening it up either.
