What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

FWIW, yes the fuel warning bulb is 'special'. Word on the street is that it's a 'dimmable' bulb, and gets brighter-the closer you get to running completely out of gas. That said, mine has never worked, and it's definitely not the bulb. Pulled the instrument cluster twice, and ran outta gas several times, just to be sure.

Makes sense that there’s something like a varistor embedded into the bulb holder. @empty_lord mentioned there’s a resistance associated with that fuel empty bulb in another post.

 

Had some nice weather here recently so I took advantage and swapped things up a bit on my Tundra. New lights, mini projectors, bug deflector, window visors, removed the XSP flares (at a shop with a fellow FGT owner for repaint and clear coat), and a good solid wash. Some more details in my build thread.

Can't remember if it was this thread or not, but I figured out the exhaust smell. It was the O2 sensor on the header, driver's side.

What I think happened is: the muffler shop that installed the headers (a year or so ago), forgot to pull the existing sensor, tossed it aside still attached to the OEM manifold, realized "oh shit, whoopsies!", and then threw in a random sensor they had laying around.

The sensor I pulled out looked like the bottom of grand-pappy's ashtray. Burnt up, chalk white. Looked like some Bosch BS, definitely not what I put in a while ago. Really surprised I wasn't throwing a code, honestly.

Any-who, if you're getting that classic exhaust smell, pull out cylinder 1's spark plug and give it a sniff.

Thanks man. I think it’s exaggerated by the sunset but it is still pretty nice. Really durable too. Pretty sure it was fully polished/corrected and ceramic coated in 2019 before I got it.

 

Programmed a new key fob to my Tundra. It took maybe 3 minutes to do so try it out if you get a key fob.

The video below shows how to do it pretty flawlessly.
- Open your door.
- Put the key in the ignition and pull it back out (don't turn it to ACC or ON)
- Cycle your door lock from lock to unlock 5 times in rapid succession.
- Close and then reopen your door.
- Cycle your door lock again from lock to unlock 5 times in rapid succession.
- Put your key into the ignition, turn it to "ON", turn it to "OFF" and pull the key out. (Don't start the truck). You will hear the door locks cycle once.
- After the door lock cycles on its own press both buttons on the key fob then release and press one button.
- If the door locks cycle on their own once then it worked. If they cycle twice then it didn't work and you will need to restart.

This is true for some DC, but not others. I can't remember if this method is the method for DC trucks using BCM for locking, or if it's the method for all other trucks (and some DC) who use RS3200 for locking, or some mix of these truths.

 

I found the repair manual and it is saying for DC/AC Tundra's that are 08/2005 and up.

And the latter isn't advertised much, and we've had quite a few people come in here, frustrated, thinking their remote was broke, "can't get into programming mode", etc. and that 2nd instruction always seems to work.

 

Oh - and my understanding of the difference is, the 1st procedure is for trucks equipped with RS3200 TVIP (toyota vehicle intrusion protection) system from the factory. The 2nd procedure is for any later-model 1st gens using the BCM for locking/security.

 

That is great information to have! I honestly didn't know that there was a difference and kind of lucked out here with mine using this method. Thanks as always for linking the other ways that it can be done and giving a heads up to those that this might not work with.

 

Decided to take those Luxapro 194 bulbs I got at Grainger and put them behind my HVAC controls.

I might be able to read the dials in the dark now, but it’s like replacing a 100watt light bulb with a 40watt. It sucks.

 

Got the catalytic converter guard installed from Desert eagle off-road. They shipped it to me for $380 out the door. Fits good on my first gen 2006 Tundra double cab. I like the air vents, and it doesn't go all the way to the back of the cats. At first I was kind of surprised but I think it worked out good to allow heat to escape. I don't think anybody's going to be able to get these off with this guard on there unless they have plenty of time.

The owner was really good to work with and he even called me and give me a walkthrough of the install, which was pretty easy, and a few tips. Highly recommended

 

You gotta go LED. All the cool kids put LED bulbs in the HVAC controls. Lol

 

Cerakoted my crusty ass headlights. Not too shabby.

 

Ordered a new backup camera too. Mine went kaputz.

Thinking of plugging in my halos. They were supposed to be white DRL ring with Amber turn signal. They sent the wrong ones. They only light up Amber. Low and slightly brighter Amber. Thinking of connecting just the bright leg for Amber DRL rings.

@912 wasn’t sure if you were still active on here. I got sent to your build thread and did the vinyl wrap just like you did. Love it. Your truck is super clean and I love checking your build log out. Keep it up!

 

Looks good! Keep them waxed to help prevent it from yellowing again or hit it with some spray clear.

 

Will have a full thread on this journey when it’s finished. Decided to address the only issue with the truck, some rust behind the frame stiffeners. Made the decision the truck is worth the work instead of just letting it go.

All in all happy to see the frames in good shape even behind the stiffeners. Fabricating new ones and will be treating the surface rust.

I may end up selling the tundra in the next couple months, as we go full time in an rv and probably tow an older wrangler. But I might just put it in storage since it’s basically irreplaceable at this point. Plus I don’t think I could swallow the loss I’d inevitably realize selling it
