except that this tundra CANT switch to 4wd if you are already stuck in the snow and no load on the back tires. Ask my wife, who now really hates my tundra lol. It’s constant anxiety wondering if/when you are about to get stuck and hope you find the console mounted switch (not a nice heads up on top of the dash like other makes where you can turn the knob with peripheral vision) and the truck shifts into 4x4 in time. Lack of 4auto is the only thing that has part of me contemplating going back to gm or ford

are you sure? That’s actually pretty disappointing. I would think the crawl control would be able to activate? Are you saying you can’t shift on the fly?

this will be my,choice to replace the oem tires. Going with an all, weather tire will narrow the winter tire season as I can run the all weathers a title later than an all season

Haven’t tested the crap out of it but after it happened to my wife I purposely got “stuck ish” twice so back tires were spinning, tried putting it into 4high but would not engage. Didn’t actually try 4lo come to think of it. Don’t have crawl control on my platinum

I can shift in 4Hi on the fly and sitting still. I think you have to be under 50-55 mph to shift on the fly.

I still don't understand why someone would not use 4HI whenever there even a remote chance of losing traction. I live 7 miles from the nearest paved road. Its often several days before the plows get to my hood when it snows. Without 4HI, I wouldn't be able to go anywhere for much of the winter.

Pics don't do your buck justice, either. Just saying.

Congrats on your kill. I have 6 more days of a rifle season before I can bow hunt, again. The rut should be in full swing then, and I have some big boys hanging around. Can't wait!!

I'd also rather bow hunt. It's slim pickings in Montana for big Mule deer unfortunately.

Totally agree on the 4WD, use it if the situation calls for it. Use it even if you’re not sure. It’s a valuable tool.

Now we are talking 2 completely, different situations (or at least I think we are).

im,talking about “it’s snowy and icy out”. Winter tires + weight in the back = don’t,need,4wd. Just don’t drive stupid.

you are talking “2,feet of snow over night”. Yes I,use 4wd in that case.

at the end of the day it’s traction. And your back tires aren’t cutting it when you, shift to 4x you’re essentially FWD as now you,can really get trough the snow. (The extra clearance helps).

FWD with winter tires are quite capable.

all I’m saying is,for 99% of my winter driving I,don’t need 4wd. When I ride on crappy tires, yes I do need 4wd more often.

No, I’m not talking “2 feet…”. I’m talking 6” of shush that turns our county roads into either a ice skating arena, or mud slide, depending on temps. 4HI is critical in both conditions.

    disagree.
Again winter tires, plus weight in back plus skilled driver = 4wd not needed.

you do you, and I’ll do me

    have a great day

Here in Colorado, we get one deer tag per season. Archery and rifle tags are separate. If I had a rifle tag I could hunt with my bow during the rifle season, but I have an archery tag, so I'm limited to hunting only during the archery season. Fortunately, the archery season here on the eastern plains last for 3 months starting Oct 1, with 2 rifle seasons mixed in.

Yup. Colorado's mule deer population was in serious decline a few decades ago, so they went to a statewide limited draw for all deer tags. You have to apply for specific units and specific seasons, and you can only draw one tag. There are special leftover tags and transferable landowner tags that hunters can get, so it is possible to kill more than one deer per season. But, for the most part it's one and done each year.

South Dakota’s tag lottery system is broken and stupid. I haven’t put in for tags since 2016.

I’ll go hunt in other states before I will give SD Game and Fish more money. When you do draw a tag you get to hunt public land around here unless you want to pay some rancher a trespass fee to hunt private.

The ranch owners can eat a bag of mustard smelling hobo dicks, I won’t give them a dime. They whine and bitch about everything in the world, beg for donations when snow kills their stock because they want to have calves in February/March. They claim AG exemptions for property taxes, collect depredation payments from the state for wild animals eating their live stock forage, draw land owner tags, and then feel entitled to charge other taxpayers to hunt on their land like it’s a private game preserve. Screw them. As far as I’m concerned 90% of them that do that shit should get taxed at residential rates for property taxes, get no land owner tags, and no depredation payments at all. If you’re running an agricultural business fine, if you’re running a game preserve that’s fine too but you don’t get to do both.

Waiting until you're stuck is not the time to engage 4WD.

Folks grousing about lack of automatic 4WD... Guessing those same folks never had to get out on a cold icy night to engage manual hubs either. Go get a Subaru or some other AWD ride for crying out loud. :)

It's a truck. It will handle snow like any other truck and watching big rigs slinging 35-37" mud tires in less than 4" of snow is pretty comical as a rule.

Watching new 4WD owners trying to stop and discovering (belatedly) that their new rig doesn't stop any quicker than all the other cars on the road is entertaining too as long as no one gets hurt.

I have tire chains for my truck for when we get a bad enough storm. 4WD is convenient but chains get cars places a 4WD truck without them can't go in the snow. Put them on all 4 wheels on a 4WD truck and cruise thru just about anything. :)

    :boink:

This was me a few years ago pushing out thru the heavy snow on an unplowed road I live on making my way into work. (Please don't hate on my old non-Toyota beast). I wasn't stuck, I just stopped to get out and take the photo for grins. Chains for the win every time. You can bet these same chains will be on the Tundra if we get something like this snow this winter. :)

@windblown101 , what kind of chains were those that you ran in that snow? Looking into chains to keep in the back.

do you put them on the front tires? Any manual I’ve read says not to put them on the front.

@Sixty9Four20 - Don't recall the brands but I run std tire chains on the back. The ones I use were made to order at the local NAPA store. On the front I run the low profile cable style tire chains since they don't ride as rough and don't beat things up on the front of the truck where clearances are tighter while turning.

I run low profile cable chains up front. However I don't put anything on the front unless it's for real bad out and I have somewhere to be. In which case speeds are seriously slow, like 25mph or less.

I haven’t driven through deep snow yet (> 12”) but thought the Pro with base tires has handled this CO winter relatively well. Have even had to switch from 4wd to 2wd in conditions that I would have definitely needed 4wd in my 4Runner.
