What parts would you 3D print for your first gen?

What all have you guys 3D printed (or want to 3D print) for your 1st gen? I've made a phone mount and I'm working on a baofeng mount for my cupholder. Previously I also bought a cabin air filter holder and a switch panel mount from people online, but I'm curious what you guys would add to your trucks.

 

That plastic cup washer for the tailgate hinge I suppose.

Do you have any of those files you'd be willing to share? What kind of phone mount did you make and what sort of printer are you using?

 

I'm working on one for Diode Dynamics SS3 pods. Just got the lights in to test against the prototype and need to make a few small tweaks. But the other side of it, the part that attaches to the truck is good to go. Retains the stock mechanism for aiming as well. Hoping to begin testing in-situ next week.

3D Scanned an OEM fog light



This is before I put in the geometry for the light pod, just testing the fit on the vehichle.

 

Yeah, I’d pretty much be all over this. It’s the one thing I am least happy with on my truck and I’m shocked more options aren’t out there. If you ever need someone to test fit or manage a howto write-up thread with pics, holler. Yours wouldn’t be the first product I’ve done that for. Although I do prefer the appearance of the Baja fog pods.

The phone holder I made at my previous job using an ultimaker s7, which was crazy nice, and I made it out of TPU. When I left I didn't take the file with me....RIP. Although I've been wanting to make another one for my S21 ultra since I switched over to using wireless android auto and I don't need it for navigation anymore. The UV5R holder I will share once I print it and make sure it fits the pop-out cupholders, I'm modifying a design I stole online.

Currently, I have access to a cheapo elegoo resin printer (super brittle but hard material, but with like 20 micron resolution) and a Felix 3 pro. The felix can do your regular host of ABS and PLA and stuff, but my lab has lately been screwing around with some weirder filaments, like these weird bronze-nylon and steel-PLA rolls. It takes some additional post-processing and it's a PITA to set up with all sorts of heat lamps and aluminum foil but after my advisor started making stuff for personal projects I've been wanting an excuse to try some of that stuff. So, if you have any ideas for small parts (think golf ball size) to print, let me know, it will give me motivation to use that darn thing.

 

I'd like to see a blank cover to replace the little dish for the double cab center console.

Okay, this one I like. Baja sells their 5W 400 lumen dome light for $75, ebay sells these $1 10W 900-1100 lumen COB LEDs that I could use instead. I may pull apart my dome light this weekend and take some measurements...

Awesome, I will reach out after I have validated the design. Its always a good idea to get a second set of eyes on stuff like this. It's easy to overlook something on my own.

I can definitely make additional ones to fit LED pods from different manufacturers. The SS3 is currently one of the better performers according to this testing, and the one I like the most personally which is why I decided to start with it.

They still sell a small cubby/storage thing for that panel (it's similar to the one above the two rear cupholders, can't see it in your photo). See parts diagram linked here. I am going to get my kids a 3D printer I think and one of my first orders of business will be printing a blank for the mirror adjustment (got my center console from a Sequoia, so it's useless to me and there's nothing else for that spot; my 2001's mirror adjustments are on the driver-side dash).

 

I've tried ordering that part before (the front small pocket piece) and it seems to be discontinued. It's always out of stock new and haven't been able to find it used.

 

Luckily the Sequoia I got mine off of already had the front pocket; the back pocket (to replace the rear climate controls my AC Tundra obviously doesn't have) arrives next week. Have you tried looking at car-part.com for DCs and Sequoias in your area?

 

I've 3D printed a few little things for my truck. I've also printed TPU bushings for the linkage on the rear axle going to the LSPV. I'd post the file here if I could find it. I purchased 3D printed tailgate bushings from B40Built on instagram, which so far have worked great. I'd like to someday print an insert for the cup holder that would allow me to slip my phone in it. There's a lot of things that I'd like to design and print when I have the time. Just little stuff.

 

Replacing the ashtray with some tech is something I've been wanting to do for a while. I looking into putting an inverter in that slot and 3d printing something to hold it in, but anything above 300 watts won't fit. Maybe I make that my radio mount instead? How is the mount holding up and what did you make it out of?

Also, TPU bushings?? That's kind of crazy you can 3D print suspension parts and have them work reliably. Wonder how they'd work as bump stops.

 

Well, I installed the mount three days ago, so it's been great! In all seriousness, it really fits great in the little channels that the ashtray slots into. Doesn't squeak, rattle, or move at all. The scangauge itself fits super snug and isn't going anywhere. Printed out of PLA on my Ender 3 Pro.

I trusted TPU on those bushings just because it won't see any significant load. I'd never trust it for an actual suspension bushing. So far they've held up great, but I put plenty of grease on them when I installed to ensure they wouldn't wear out immediately.

I don't have any pictures at the moment but, I'm pretty sure I've seen some people mount a CB in the ashtray slot and have it look pretty clean.

 

Well, you've inspired me to make something. Behold the UV5R ashtray mount. It could defintely be better, I wish I angled it towards me a bit and put it more to the right and higher so as to not interfere with the transfer case shifter but for about 15 minutes in CAD (10 of it was stealing other people's models) and $3 worth of resin I think it's OK. It's designed to work with an antenna that's on the roof and connects via cable, hence why there is no antenna on the radio (it wouldn't fit with the 20 degree angle I put on it anyways).

 

@OverSquareEng would you be willing/open to selling the scan file of the factory fog light you took? I did a fiberglass retrofit of aftermarket Jeep fog lights into my factory housing a long time ago. I have been on the lookout for a 3d scan file of our fog lights so I can finally make an updated version that I can do maintenance on. If not, it's totally cool, I understand if you're making a prototype to sell. I just wanted to avoid the PITA process of sketching it from scratch. Happy holidays!
