“Divide 50 by half” must mean “50 divided by 0.5” because the word half is not specified to mean half of 50. But it’s also not specified at all.

If I had used vague language like this in any proof I wrote in college, I would have lost points guaranteed. Those math classes taught me more about grammar and meaning exactly what I say than any English or Lit class ever did.
