First Oil Change... 5 or 10k?

Just dropped off, and picked up my new Tundra from its 5000 mile service. I noticed they didn't change the oil so I checked the maintenance schedule, and sure enough, it's not recommended until 10K.

Are the masses here at tundras.com comfortable with that? I trust you guys more than the dealer. Driving has been light so far, mostly just around town and highway to work. I'm confident synthetic oil can go 10000 miles, I just always thought that the concept of break-in oil getting changed early still existed.

Worth me doing it myself early, or just wait another 5000 to get the free change?

Your Tundra should be using full synthetic oil, so the change interval is 10k miles. They have been doing this a long time and seem to know what they are doing, so I would trust the brand.

 

On my 2014 tundra D.C. 4x4 I went 10,000 miles before my first oil change and that truck lasted till about 43,000 miles.... then I crashed it into a tree at the ranch driving in reverse going about 40 mph. My new CM 4x4 I go every 6,000 using Mobil 1 full synthetic

For the price of an oil filter and oil. And call me old school I would do 5000
And I do 3000 miles actually
Cheap insurance and a lot less than a new engine

I don't know if I would trust a filter to go that long, but synthetic oil I would. I change mine every 5k with Mobile 1 full synthetic and a Toyota filter.

The only reason it's 5,000 on flex fuel is because toyota is basing that oil/filter change on if the person actually uses that crap. So it could go 10,000 if you wanted. Check out black stone labs if you don't believe me

 

I'm not arguing the validity in your statement that you can go longer....just going by the book.

 

Mine is a FFV, and 5000 is the recommended mileage as well. It actually says 2500 miles if you used E85.

Do the non-FFV service books only show a 10,000 mile change? You'd think with Toyota footing the bill, they would keep it at 10,000 for everyone unless you have used E85.

 

Not a flex model. According to this nice mega thread, and the associated manuals - its 10,000 for mine. I'm not insanely comfortable with that but... I really know nothing about oil. I'd like to guess Toyota woulden't be recommending 10k just to save cost, knowing it will harm the motor, right?!

Anyway - thanks for all the input guys. I guess 10k is acceptable for some, whereas 5k for others.

 

I'll just leave it alone until 10k. One less thing to worry about I suppose. Here is the schedule off the maintenance guides on Toyota's site...

 

I knew I was getting close to being at the end of my free oil changes. I called the Toyota dealership where I take it and they told me the service plan was 2 years or 25K and that to get my oil done every 5k miles, meaning 5 free changes. I'm at 23k, so I'll get my last one done here soon.

The last couple though I've been stretching it to about 7k and getting it done.

 

I found this on Toyota's website if this helps. Seems the FFV engine has not been approved for the 10k oil change. Even the dealer isn't clear on this.

Wanted to do mine at 7500 or so, but my tech has been on strike for a few weeks now so I am up at 8k now.

 

You guys are all crazy - 20k for me and those are hard miles.

 

Since I drive a lot less than 10k per year, I go by the time interval rather than mileage. I just got my oil changed today (at 20110 miles). This was my 10th oil change. 5 of them were freebies (conventional oil changed by Toyota--back in 2010, all Tundras came with non-synthetic oil) and the last 5 were Mobil 1, 0W-20. But I personally have no problem going with 1 year/10k schedule.

 

I go with a 7500 mile interval, which is just under 1 year of driving for me. I can understand those who choose to go with a more conservative interval though.

 

5k, too much break in debris in the engine, change it now. I tow 5000lbs with my Tundra twice a month and I change the oil every 4000 miles. Using Amsoil signature 0w30 with a TRD filter.

 

The Dealer i bought mine at gives another year added to the plan at no charge....so i get 3 years service plan

 

The 5k vs 10k on FFV vs Non-FFV is a valid issue. Although I dont know the exact reason why the mileage is different but I can see why it would be. However, my issue is with my Non-FFV having the "check engine light" comes on at 5k. If its Non-FFV the light shouldn't be coming on at 5k when its recommended to be 10k. When I changed my oil at 7500 it still was clean and just starting to get black. I am comfortable splitting the difference, I just have a hard time going 10k. But all in all oils today are much better than years gone by, in my opinion.
