Waited a few months for this to get restocked. I think I'm putting down the knife habit now. At least for the next several years.

I have a real one I am letting go of… it’s been upgraded with flytanium brass scales (oe scales included), rgt carbon fiber backspacer… and of course that Benchmade centering, so you know it’s real

    upload_2023-10-24_19-58-23.jpg
    upload_2023-10-24_19-58-41.jpg
    upload_2023-10-24_19-58-58.jpg

    175 takes it

it will center with original scales, will probably center with these but I just didn’t want to mess with it anymore

I am excited about trying a couple new steels!
Aogami, or Blue Paper #1, is an excellent steel famous for its use in Japanese cutlery for years. Also known as Ao-Ko or Ao-ichi-ko it is a high carbon bearing (1.3%-1.4% C) exceptionally clean steel (P <=.025% / S <=.004%) that will do well in many edged tool applications .
Shirogami, or White Paper#1, is an excellent forging steel especially due to it’s purity and lack of chromium or tungsten as found in the Blue Paper steels from Hitachi. Also known as Ao-Ko or Ao-ichi-ko, it carries as much carbon as Blue Paper #1 (1.3%-1.4% C) just without the additional fanfare making it one of the purest carbon steels on the market.
These “super steels” have been around for years, but almost impossible to get, here in the USA. Price of the steel is about 4 times quality carbon knife steels like 52100 or W2. Thinking about a gomi type assembly with some Damascus steel layers on each side of the Japanese steel core.

No I haven’t tried copper. Several reasons.
Copper melts at around 1984f and most of my forge heats are around 2000+, so I would have to be extremely careful or risk losing the whole thing. Also, copper turns green in certain environments and that would make an ugly mess.
I like adding a layer of nickel to isolate the core layer and it would be especially nice with this super steel because it will prevent carbon migration. Without an isolation layer the high carbon core steel will end up being the same as the entire knife with around .9% C. IMG_0617.jpgIMG_0618.jpgSomething like this. This one doesn’t have the super steel, though.

It’s been a few years since I got my Sebenza 21, haven’t bought another folder since. Initially I had some buyers remorse, then it started to grow on me… Now it’s my everyday user and I just love it. Takes on its own patina and character with use. Elegant, simple design, executed almost flawlessly.

I pondered for months over where and how to mount my old M9 bayonet in/on the console. Last week I had to pull the top of the console off while installing a chrome delete kit, and it all came to me at once.

That’s cool. Almost looks like a second shifter like the old 4x4s ; one for the transfer case and one for the transmission!

I’ve got another couple sheaths to make in the next couple days. It seems like a good idea to have them ready in case anyone wants them for Christmas.

Finished the first of the 3 knife set. A chef’s knife (this one) and a paring knife and a petty knife that should be finished before Sunday. The same steel, same piece of Purple Heart wood, and the same mosaic pins in all three.
This traditional European style chef’s knife blade, is almost 9” long.IMG_0689.jpg IMG_0688.jpg IMG_0690.jpg
