Considering 23-24 Tundra... Common Issues?

C'mon guys... I know I'm a newbie here but this isn't doing anyone any good. I appreciate all info shared.

 

2023 Limited TRD Offroad with a March, 2023 build date. Currently sitting at 9k miles. I love the truck and love the low end torque. Overall drivability is much improved over my 2014 Tundra and 2018 Tacoma. I thought it was a good deal at $60,900 compared to the competition.

No mechanical problems, no CELs, no let downs. The only recall I've had is on the fuel line rubbing, which should be an easy fix next month.

Honestly, my biggest complaint is there are a few tiny areas around the rear tailgate spoiler that have chipped away the paint. Three areas about 5-10mm long. I told my dealership about it to document it.

I see a lot of complaints about the nannies on here, but every new car has excessive safety and emissions nannies on it nowadays. Luckily, you can turn most of these things off if you want to.

you've told the OP about it, did your non-owner gen 2/2.5 "duty" to shit on gen 3 trucks.

Youre assuming one they dont know, and two that there is a problem with it. Big assumptions

 

no, no platidip or covers, Im too OCD for that. I went full OEM replacement grill surround since you can't paint over chrome, and body part paint from a body shop for the flares and rear spoiler. My dealer did it all right when the truck came in, I just waited a few weeks for everything to be done, including tires, center caps, etc.

Overall its a good truck. Some issues are overblown, some are us as consumers being very picky as we should be when it comes to a very expensive truck.

 

In many jobs there's no direct evidence left of the problem that occurred. Think of a reactor explosion or operating system crash with no crash dump captured. All you may have is scattered radioactive remnants or a console message. Your job as an engineer is to take the blueprints, gather facts, find the problem and come up with a solution, so it won't happen again. I'm applying the same engineering principles to the V6 bearing problem. All the facts speak it is a problem embedded into the engine's design.

You can share your experience, sure. And it is welcome! But the fact is even you, the owner, don't know how the bearings are doing in your truck. You may be the next 0.005% or what is the current failure rate.

I recently got a 2023 TRD Pro. It was no markups and had red seats so I got it.
Earlier 2022 had lots of engine failures (when I say lots it means a higher percentage) due to turbo or main bearing, and I think this was traced to a third party part error and then some internal factory issue which was resolved.

Then another open issue which all older toyotas have (

2022-2023) is the fuel line upgrade. Mine 2023 is a late 2023 so I see in the app that its already done now and no TSB is out there.

If you are buying new 2024 model (or even late 2023) I doubt you will find any significant issues.

Coming to minor issues. they exist. For example my drivers side door requires more force to close than other doors.

 

I agree with this post 100%. My June 2023 build doesn't exhibit any of the common nitpicks that earlier builds have. I have no wind noise or abnormal rattles, squeaks, or other noises in the cab. My seat panels haven't cracked, and show no signs of doing so. My throttle response is excellent in Normal drive mode, and is ridiculously responsive is Sport mode. My tailgate doesn't rattle and is aligned perfectly. The possible fuel line leak problem was corrected at the factory, so I have no recall on that issue. I've had no turbo or bearing problems, but I'm only at 6K miles, so time will tell on those.

I think owners of late 2023 and later builds will soon be singing praises about their Gen 3 Tundras. I feel bad for owners of earlier builds who have had to work thru the bugs of a first model year build, but that's to be expected, IMO.

And as with anything, the minority of people who have problems will always be the most vocal. If I had been monitoring this forum before buying my Tundra, the negativity probably would have swayed my decision. I'm glad it didn't because I now realize most of it is overblown.

Came from a Tacoma with over 400,000km (250,000miles)…I love everything with my 23 Tundra Limited OR….more power, transmission seemless, better fuel economy than 07 Tacoma overall very happy!

'23 blueprint plat Hybrid owner here. I was a Ford F-250 owner (7 years) and switched and have NO REGRETS! The platinum trim eliminates the "chrome" all over look which was a big plus for me. More like gunmetal. I have 9K miles and the only issue I have had was the thigh bolster switch on the drivers seat which was an easy fix by the dealer (which gave me a loaner). My biggest concern before buying was power and towing BUT with the iForce Max, I have no complaints about either. I did get a WDH for the trailer (10,000 GVWR) but when it was all set up, I could have done without it. I loved my Ford, but I had enough of the nit pick stuff that kept breaking and needing fixed (suspension and steering primarily). And my MPG improved almost 50%!

 

Well, I ran down to a local dealer that had a Platinum and Limited TRD in stock and got the chance to drive both back to back. I honestly preferred the ride quality and comfort of the Platinum over the slightly stiffer ride of the TRD... They also had a non-TRD 1794 so I got an opportunity to see the chrome trim in person - Definitely not a fan. So, I think I'm now leaning toward the Platinum.

 

Do you off road much or at all? If not the platinum will do you fine. If you do, you cant add the locker or MTS afterwards to a Platinum.

I had the same opportunity (1794 vs Platinum). I had no interest in the TRDm simply because I dont do much off roading AND I was done with the stiffer ride I had with my F250. I LOVE the ride quality of my Platinum. Good luck with your choice regardless which way you go.

 

And I chose the Platinum over the 1794 because of the exterior looks.

 

I don't. At least not in any way that would require the locker... The truck is more for towing a TT and hauling things when needed.

If I were gonna do any kind of hardcore off roading, I'd go pick up another Grand Cherokee Trailhawk or something. Not a 1/2 ton pickup.

 

Just thought of this. I saw a YOUTUBE video which implied most of the chrome on the '24's are gone (If that is an issue). But if you can get a '23, I'd go that way. The '24s increased in price substantially with very little gain.

 

platinum with AVS rides AWESOME in almost every scenario, empty with comfort mode, towing and hauling with auto level rear, etc, sport mode is great with stiffer shocks and steering, etc. just dial the ride you want

if your towing and hauling, GET THE ADVANCED package

plus , nicest interior in a tundra, black with blue ambient lighting, etc looks sweet.

ya, I would pass on that, the TRD grill also looks out of place on a platinum

but I get people who would want the TRD instead, but if you haul or tow, get the advanced package.
