Picking up my lightly used ‘21 TRD Pro Crew Max next Sat and I’m just wondering what fuel grade Toyota recommends for the truck? Do you deviate from that recommendation? Thanks all.

Consensus on the forum is 87. You won't see any issues with it. Anything higher is overkill and just money dumping down the drain.

    Too many, but not enough....
Unless you are blown, no reason to go up past 87.

Recently filled up with ethanol free regular (87 or 89 not sure). Truck is getting 19.3mpg average when I usually get more like 16.8mpg. Quite the difference!

Ethanol free and 87 octane or better. I'll pay a little extra for no corn in the tank, even if the MPG savings don't cover the cost, for 2 reasons.
    1. Ethanol is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls water from the air. Not good for a vehicle, and especially bad if it sits for days at a time or makes frequent short trips.
    2. Ethanol has been shown to not "save the environment" as it had been pitched. It's a net negative on the "green" front, unless that green is lining slimy pockets. I'll pay more to give them less.

Yup. That ethanol comes from corn. Fields prepped, planted, maintained and harvested by diesel powered farm equipment. Then transported by a diesel big rig to process at a plant that’s likely fossil fuel powered to turn it into ethanol that is then transported by diesel to the gas station. Then you put it into your car and get worse gas mileage thus burning more fuel than if you didn’t use ethanol. But 10% of the US gas consumption is a big number. It has an impact on our need for foreign oil. That’s the real purpose, not emissions or being green or anything. Was also supposed to be a good use of surplus corn, except that farmers stopped farming food crop and started farming corn for ethanol. So you also get a drop in food crop that may make us more dependent on foreign sources of food or grain, like the wheat we import.

The solution to foreign oil dependence is local oil production. Doesn't change my stance, and they did pitch it as being green.

Yes they did. Like electric cars. If you get into a gas car or an electric car and drive it 200 miles, the electric car is a greener solution. But how did your electric car get here? What’s it made of? Where did that electricity come from? It’s a shell game. Green is rarely green without a cost. Often negating any perceived advantages.

Good to know. Thanks guys, 87 it is! Going to save me a ton of $$ over the 4.50+ I’ve been paying for diesel.

Here in Pa. ethanol free last week was 4.94/gallon. About a buck per gallon more than unleaded. Don't waste the money go with 87 you'll be fine.

The extra money for ethanol free really only makes sense if it's something thats sitting, like a snowblower, lawn mower, generator, weekend car. For a daily driver it's not going to make a difference, especially with something that burns fuel so quickly its going to be smoke before it has time to do any damage that ethanol causes.

The cost of diesel is whats really causing inflation. You raise the cost of diesel and the cost of everything goes up. The cost of gas doesnt have a huge impact on inflation but its what the majority of people buy so its what gets the most attention. The entire country would be better off if diesel was cheaper than gas.

Yep, I run ethanol free in all my small 2 cycle engines and Polaris ATV. The biggest problem with those little 2 cycles is the fuel lines. Even the ones that are rated for ethanol will get hard. I add a litle Sea Foam to the mix. Truck, boat, and lawn tractor are engineered to run on 10% ethanol and never had a problem.

Because my truck runs well on it, and because it's like $0.30/gal cheaper. :D

I mean, I’m pretty sure the absurd amount of money printing that has happened over the last three years is the main cause of inflation….

Yeah of course, Im just referring to when you see grocery store prices rise every time the price of diesel goes up. I used to be a distributor and every time diesel went up, so did our prices, the cost of fuel just gets passed onto the consumer, the company doesnt take a hit.

I was Logistics Finance Manager for the largest tile company before retiring. Tile is expensive to ship. I tracked oil, diesel, and gasoline prices weekly. We had a table that our freight companies used to calculate a diesel surcharge. In turn we charged our customers a surcharge on their invoices. Sales requested that I track gasoline because the average consumer does not relate to diesel prices. We had some large customers that balked at the surcharge.

I ran premium this summer as a test. I got about 0.5mpg better when towing, but didn’t see a difference in normal driving. When I went back to regular octane last month the truck felt like it lost some low end power. It felt sluggish off the line and didn’t hold 6th gear as long when climbing hills. So now I only run premium. At $8-10 more per fill up, it doesn’t pay for itself but I like the improved performance. Phuk it

Usually 87 runs ok but every now and again I'll get a tank that pings too much so I'll have to add premium to tame it down.

In my experience, lowest recommended octane is fine for normal driving, but when towing I go up. I was towing a small/medium trailer up a pass and felt very down on power, found a post saying it could be motor retarding ignition to avoid detonation when pulling hard. Gassed up with high octane and problem went away. I haven’t noticed a benefit to high octane for normal driving though.
